Pokey wrote:As an aside to this I was wondering if you could use a 240V cabinet with separate fridge and freezer sections and connect it to a 12V compressor unit. Of course you wouldn't have any of the 240V fittings like lights etc but they could be replaced with 12V if required. To me, as a non fridge mechanic, I would think that the evaporators in the fridge wouldn't know what voltage the compressor is running at and therefore wouldn't care. If possible to do it would give you the options of any fridge cabinet you could find that suits your setup and still have a highly efficient compressor as well as being able to move the hot parts outside and under the MH to make cooling more efficient.

Anyone have any knowledge if this is feasible?
That is exactly what Waeco have done with their 150 & 210 l, 2 door fridges, they got basic Westinghouse units and fitted them with Danfos compressors and control units, I have met several who have purchased the Westinghouse units and had them converted to 12V I believe there is, some one that does the conversion in Townsville area, I believe the savings over buying the Waeco are significant, though I think that if I was refitting the bus I would go with an inverter and 240v fridge.
I understand the cost of running a gas unit is almost prohibitive with the larger 3 ways using almost 2 kg of gas a week in the hotter areas where you can pay $40 to $50 for 9 KG refill.
The difference in cost between a 12 v and 240 v unit would go a long way towards fitting out your solar.

Some time back this was a common modification and these unit were available through a number of caravan/motorhome accessory suppliers as well as alternative energy places where whole houses or farms were low voltage and off the grid. I believe places like Energy Matters http://www.energymatters.com.au/fisher- ... p-351.html still have units listed but they are made to order these days, not an on the shelf item. Some mods by some converters are now nothing more than an inverter mounted in the back of the fridge compartment.
The little DB35 compressor they use can't keep up with the 240vac compressor fitted standard to these fridges, the standard fridge is tested at 42 degC under very tough conditions to pass the Aust Standard 4774.2 test before it even qualifies for a star rating, you will see on the Energy Matters site the modified low voltage model has an upper temp of only 35 degC in their power consumption figures. You have to wonder when the one figure is used for a temp any where between 28degC and 35 degC, we all know the cooler the ambient temp the less energy the fridge uses.
Figures put forward as a result of tests conducted in accordance to Aust Standards testing are reliable figures, figures put forward on a resellers website have to be questioned as to how those figures were obtained. If they used the equivalent DB50 or DB80 compressor then maybe it could keep up but the energy figures would make it non competitive with a standard unit running on an inverter including all losses. Household refrigeration has come a long way over the last 10 yrs and with the introduction of gasses like butane and propane as refrigerants now becoming the norm the energy use and capabilities of these household fridges will improve even more.

12 volt fridge - never any problem with it. Runs off 240 volt when on mains or gennie.

More information needed, yes you can run it from an inverter but it depends on the model if it's battery ecconmical to do it.
