New Suburban HWS

Post by RussellB[SA] »

Well it was done, picked the MH up today brought it home to test everything out.

Gas system heated ok, as soon as the water felt warm turned the gas off and turned the 240v system on. After 4 hours the water was still as cold as a ......

Checked everything and then rang the installers, and went through all the steps I took, noting that the 240v socket under the bed which the Truma was plugged into didn't appear to have any thing live, plugged a hot air dryer into it an nothing, it was working with the Truma, as it kept blowing the circuit breaker (faulty circuit breaker). He said he'd ring back, did so after checking the installer and said did you switch the Truma 240v switch on like the note said? WHAT NOTE!!

Ok they originally said the Truma gas and 240v switches would become redundant, but decided to make things easier for me by reinstating the Truma 240v switch which is in the cupboard.

Thanks fellas it works fine now.

Now all I gotta do is work out why the 12v power for the TV, SATTV system, RADIO and TV antenna is lifeless!! Worked fine when I tested the new upgraded Alden SSC, but after I touch some wires looking for the 12v line for the new CB, NOTHING...

No Dot, the mystery is ELECTRICITY! Talk about FAITH??? Everybody knows it exist, but NOBODY understands it - blind faith if you ask me. I reckon electricity is feline. :o Purrs at low voltage when properly earthed, but crank up the amps and watch out!

dawg (who uses it, but treats it like governments and does not trust it. :( )

Sounds like you need a holiday Russell!!!

So I'm guessing the hot water won't fire up on gas either? (12v ignition?)

Problem solvered (thanks for the tip Peter - 2Foot6)

The Setec fuse had been blown, why? your not gonna believe this:

The old Saturn TV antenna had an electrically raised arm by means of a single rocker switch.

switch goes on arm goes up switch goes off arm goes down
switch goes on arm goes up switch goes off arm goes down (Homer (Simpson)

OK so I've taken the Saturn Antenna down and put it in an appropriate place in my garage.

Switch redundant. Never touched the thing till this week.

Tap 12v off switch wires for extra down light and new Winegard TV antenna, all is fine.

This week attempting to wire up the new CB radio after testing the new HWS, no power any more, there was before when I was testing the upgraded Alden SSC controller.

AAAARGH

OK thinking caps on, I have visually checked the SETEC's fuzes, all ok.

Hunted for other fuses in line and in all the usual and unusual places NOTHING!!!

Young Peter (2foot6) drops me a hint about checking the SETEC fuzes cause thats where the power for the Alden comes from (and everything else on that side of the bus that ain't working now, I do so again but armed with a multi meter not just my crappy eyes and BINGO blown fuze, replace and all's well until I blow it again.

Ya have to switch it on and turn the Winegard AMP on to blow the fuze.

OK, what is the problem,

remember

"switch goes on arm goes up switch goes off arm goes down"

yup you guessed, the sods have arranged for for same lines to be reversed on switching ain't they, clever sods, so what is positive when off is negative when on, brilliant!!!!

I think you might find the switch 50 meters other other side of main north road.

OK then problem solvered now back to mounting the CB radio. mmm :geek:

I've seen a similar state of wiring to that behind the electrical panel in a certain caravan I worked on that has it's own thread else where on this forum. It had the added bonus of 2 link points that consisted of a bolt in a plastic link box base and every positive cable, with an eye terminal attached, bolted to it ans shquished together, and a plastic cover jammed down over the top with a screw in two opposite corners as the plastic clips couldn't quite reach their locking position. This just floating in the mess, not anchored to a wall or similar, same set up for the negative. All the cable the same size and colour, red for positive, black for negative. Every thing was protected by a single fuse at the supply end and the one long length of cable threaded back to the battery compartment... with just a tad of voltage drop  from the anchor bolt points cable went out to seperate switches and fuses, but all the cabling was the same size as the main supply cable, an overload or short blew the main supply fuse first
