I'll have to double check when I find the manual for the suburban HWS but I am pretty sure the switch isn't powered by 240v, its powered to switch the remote control box which is down on the heater tank itself. The gas uses 12v switch over and pretty sure the electric side does the same via the control unit. I remember seeing the 240v wiring connections on the control. Not 100% on this one. I'll check as soon as possible or when I find the damn manual.

Re: EXCESS SOLAR POWER DIVERTED.
Dirk it depends which switch you're referring to.
There is the square panel that has a switch & a light on it. That is the 12V turn on gas switch which opens the gas & auto lights it.
Then there is, or will need be, another switch to turn on the 240V heating element.
This is the one that Peter was referring to.
The manual was in that link I posted before. It shows the wiring diagram.
All in good time!!

HI Bruce
THAT is very naughty of them
I am surprised the Approvers have not picked that up
OK for fixed wiring where the Active is known but definately NOT very sensible for where the supply is by means of an Extension lead.
Of course ,changing even to the extent suggested adding a switch, voids any approval
It is Also covered by the regs as FIXED wiring electrical work "SHALL be carried out by an electrician"

Yes. Naughty!
I'm assuming they followed those install instructions to the letter!
Dirk has his to install once he gets to that stage so does he instruct his installer to follow "protocol" or follow the included instructions?
One may be illegal & the other may void his warranty?
No body can win in this one!!!

Just found my manual but looks like you blokes have already found the dilemma. Guess it has to be done legally and if it wound up as a warranty issue then you could argue its not legal wiring it up that way.

Re: EXCESS SOLAR POWER DIVERTED.
In the exploded view they are showing a 240v switch down at the tank itself, item 33 in the link below. Hadn't noticed this switch where its supposed to be located. Bruce has yours got this switch. I'll have to check tomorrow to see if its fitted to mine. Would have though it would need to be waterproof being down there as the vent is open to atmosphere down here.

Re: EXCESS SOLAR POWER DIVERTED.
Yes, I have one there as well. You (your electrician!) could just connect the switch wires (loop back?) I've been talking about & you could use that switch you referred to but why would you want to go outside, open the door and turn on the switch every time rather than do it at your switchboard inside your vehicle/caravan?
Same with the gas. The older version I had in my old Bedford had to be lit with a match or gas lighter outside each time!!
Soon got sick of that!!
I've had no moisture, corrosion or other problem with either version. Not a problem.
Does yours have a secondary cover over the outside vent?
There were some sold that didn't have that and a lot of people had trouble keeping the gas alight.

Re: EXCESS SOLAR POWER DIVERTED.
Bruce,
You keep changing your avatar and I was wondering who in the hell this bloke was.....Lol.
Yes mine has the tinplate cover. I just haven't noticed this switch or safety pin!!!! maybe I haven't looked hard enough or whatever but I read about it and thought I would have seen it.... anyhow I'll look tomorrow. Definitely fit the switch up inside, no sense in going out in the dark when you don't have to.

Re: EXCESS SOLAR POWER DIVERTED.
Got ordered to change it or the next trip might lonely!
I was just flashing my new teeth!!!
I got them about 17 years ago & they've been in my drawer ever since!
They were such a bad fit I just couldn't stand it any more.
A few hours with a little gadget like a dremel & now I can bite nipples like no man's business!!
Got my tongue and inside my cheeks a few times but gradually sorting it out.
The ones that I've retired were obtained in Melbourne when I was 21 !!! Nothing but pink plastic left!!
Both of us have brand new teeth now & we just sit here grinning at each other! Or is it a growl?
Hey!... wasn't this thread about Solar Power?
I feel a red letter coming my way!!

I can understand the complaints from the bride....
My first ones and hate the bastards. I know what you mean about biting your lip and tongue, doesn't that bring a tear to the eye. I felt like radish the race horse at first. Old age just isn't fun like I thought it was going to be.
