Exhaust Brake System

Post by KevKim37 »

Hi TI Terry and Bob/Bev,

The Exhaust Brake System was originally designed by a couple of mates in Cairns and I think they have sold the rights since to a firm called "Gearing Dynamics", Geelong Vic. I originally fitted it to my '92 Hilux 4x4 in 2000 and then transferred to our new L/Cruiser HDJ79 Series Ute in 2004. The unit did approx 40000kms on the Hilux and has clocked up 92000kms on the Cruiser with only a service kit fitted to the Vacuum operated Actuator(Slave Cylinder) at about 70000kms.
It makes a big difference in downhill situations and the lower the gear ie Off-Road the better it works. As an example down most range roads if switched off in 4th gear the vehicle will tend to pick up a lot more speed and switching back on depending on Gradient it will slow up the Rig to close to it's initial speed before switch off. It is also helping with engine braking in town, minimal as it is at 60kmh but as before when switched off you notice how much extra foot braking is needed to achieve the same retardation as when switched on. Also helping with Brake Pad longevity with our all up weight.

I would not be without this extra benefit and the Mechanical Engineer who inspected for the GVM Upgrade was quite impressed with it's operation.

Cheers Kev.

Certainly sounds the goods, thank Kev. There is more than one unit out there that desperately needs an exhaust brake fitted, I really notice the difference in the Mazda when it's mucking up, smelly brakes by the bottom of a long decent lke Macquarie Pass or Mt Ousley and I'd imagine the drop down from Dorrigo to the coast up Nth would be a nightmare without an exhaust brake, even the kombi have issues coming down there.

Thanks for that Kev,I just wondered if you built it your self thats all. I built one for our first MH ( a bedford with a 401 Leyland fitted. All I did was make sure the manifold gasket was a good steam type, made a butterfly for the pipe driven by a small air ram controled by a maxi brake thingo on the dash. It worked real well. Dont know if the TD5 Disco would like one, could put some strain on the terbo seals, but I would they save so much brake on a big hill, should be standed on a tug....
Thanks Bob n Bev

The Volvo truck engines have the exhaust brake right at the turbo housing so the seals appear to be able to handle the pressure. Most truckies reckon the Volvo engined trucks retarding from the exhaust brake is like waving a wet hankie out the window but I guess there is a weight difference

If I source one from a wrecker, will it do bad things to my cummins engine?

We have this Pacbrake on our Cummins 6BTA5.9 with Allison Auto. I think it is the same as the one Derek has on his Swagman, but is currently out of service. It MUST be fitted with a switch to ensure that is not closed when the throttle is open (limit switch on throttle actuator or pedal)

This drops our revs by 500rpm, and stops the transmission from auto changing to a higher gear.
