Earth on Xantrax battery moniter.

Post by Kelvin12 »

G'Day All,

One for the electrical minded... I have an Xantrax Link Pro battery management unit, http://www.xantrex.com/power-products/p ... nitor.aspx Data for this unit is on the right hand side of the page plus the wiring diagram. In another article I am reading, http://www.fridge-and-solar.net/monitor-tips.htm it emphasizes that ALL earth connections REGARDLESS must be connected via the shunt.... Question is, does the earth on the 240v inverter need to be hooked up to the shunt as well. Secondly, does the earth on the solar regulator also need to be hooked up to the shunt. Thirdly, what of the battery temperature wire and the battery sensor wires from the solar regulator. (Morning Star MPPT 60amp). Do these also need to be run via the shunt. Am I worrying unduly...... probably.

Thanks in advance.

Dirk

Might pay to remove that word "expert" Dirk and just let the opinions flow.
I know I've been hesitant to reply to any post asking for expert opinions as I don't wanna be branded as a know it all!!!
I'm sure a few will pop in with a reply soon.
I've got no monitor on mine other than a couple of volt meters.

Contact Mr Val at Fridge and Solar.
Then you know you are talking to an expert.

The second link was to his site, that's where I go the screed from, didn't know it was him though. Haven't heard of Mr. Val on the forums since the old CMHC days. According to his site he isn't answering any questions these days due to health problems I gather.

Hi Dirk
For the monitor to give you a true indication,ALL B minus of loads should be connecte to theLOAD end of the SHUNT
BUT the SHUNT needs to able to carry that load .
It needs to be the correct shunt for both those loads AND the monitor, much depends on inverter size as they can draw heavy currents
Since the supplied shunt is up to 500A that should not be a pronblem
Yes the solar regh Neg terminal should also be connected tothe LOAD side of the SHUNT or youagain will get afalse SOC reasding of the battery

YOU must make absolutely certain that the battery /ies you are monitoring have NO OTHER NEGITIVEe connection to FRAME BBBBBBBBETWWEEN THE BATTERY NEG TERMERMINAL &lTHE SHUNT BATTERY END!!

The pos from the regulator goes straight to the battery POS, preferabblywith a fuse as close as practical to the battery

The load [main] neg of the reg should also be connected to the LOAD side of the SHUNT
AS indicated ALL negs should be connected to the load sidea

The small sensor wires should be connected DIRECT to the battery terminals
The temp probe as indicated in the instructions to the battery

G'Day Peter,

Thanks heaps for this information always appreciated. Just one more question. The earth on the inverter, I am assuming would also go to the load end as the others, would that be right.

Actually you have already answered that question, just re-read your post. Thanks again Peter.
