Re: Earth on Xantrax battery moniter.
The problem arrises when the term "earth" instead of negative cables is used. One cable from the battery negative to the battery end of the shunt, every other connection that would normally go to the battery negative goes to the load end of the shunt, this includes the cable that connects to the vehicle body.
As Peter says, if you have battery voltage sense wires for the solar regulator, that negative wire can also go straight to the battery terminal, but no other wires. If any other wires are connected to the battery negative terminal and not to the load end of the shunt, the meter san't see how much current flows to the piece of equipment so the reading on the meter will always be wrong.

HI
We agree

which is why I refrained from using term "earth "& use B-[minus]or negative .
THAT term "EARTH" on it's own,can lead to ALL sorts of misunderstandings

ie what is the definition of "EARTH' in electrical terminology??

Yes, I can remember early days of my apprenticeship where "earth", "negative", "active" and "ground" were used, then "positive", "live", "supply", "neutral". All carry overs from other trades etc. Damn confusing for a young fella. Not a real has changed....Lol.

HI Dirk
You missed two "Lines"[neither active or neutral
&" phases"

Peter,
I did miss those two. Funny how all these terms overlap from trade to trade. Probably not a good thing but managed to get a good "grounding".......
