Hi, all.

Rob - looks like we should allow a month or so from your driveway to Cooktown return should we go for Xmas in July. That's serious driving. Our current plan is Townsville via Bingara, for which we've allocated four months.
Yes, OP's are other peoples, and you guys are more than welcome to raid our fridge. That's if our itineraries coincide of course. "Good luck with that" I think I heard someone say....
See you on the back roads,

Shonky, we did the Cooktown trip last year for the Cooktown show and really enjoyed it. The road conditions from Mareeba or Cairns are very good, all bitumen and in excellent condition. Lots to do and see on the road and there are campsites and caravan parks on the way there ( we did it straight thru about 5 hours total driving time with a stop at Palmer River Roadhouse ). Be careful of stock wandering free as in many areas there are no fences, more of a problem at night rather than in the day. Had a great time at Cooktown, we stayed at the racecourse with a terrific group of other travellers and enjoyed it no end, the townspeople were great and there is a lot to see up there, if it wasn't for some medical issues we would be there again this year. All we can say is go for it.
