Well the castor cost about $20 After that, a few pieces of steel, a welder (someone who knows what they are doing), a drill and a bit of paint. It is held to the tow bar by the tow ball pin - pop the pin and it falls off.

The ferry operators are used to motorhomes (& others) hitting the ramp on a 45 degree angle & just stand back & watch.
Most of us have a decent towbar or something that will just drag across it but if it is a real low bum you could end up stranded.
Most times it's just laziness of the operators not dragging the plate up a bit higher up the bank. Sometimes they are almost dead level......... but not often!

I would suggest that the wheel be welded to a plate that is held in position with "U" Bolts.
The plate could be cut long enough to be touching the drawbar to stop any rearward movement.
This would keep all welding off the vehicle, and the wheel is easily removed (panel beating straight or replaced if necessary).

Just a suggested improvement on this great idea OK ? :D

Bruce if you click on the photo you get a slightly bigger version that shows, if you look closely, that the wheel is attached to a plate that is flat up against the bottom of the towbar 'recepticle' & has plates up either side that have holes in them for the pin to go through that holds the towbar tongue in place.
Pull that pin out & the wheel drops off & the tongue could slide out.
Very ingenious idea.
Is it a one of or an article off the shelf?
I could see a few buying them for 4WD's.
For bigger busses I think I'd like one each side directly onto the chassis rails,
Pioneer busses etc just have 'skid plates' on either side. Easy to see why the 60% overhang law is in place?

This is the arrangement I had on my last caravan - one on each side combined with 12v jacks. The original wind downs got wiped off at the first service station.

There is two sites for camping at Mannum
One is a free site the other is $10 per night per site . Self registration and payment in an envelope
On the pay site Bolero CAW136 it's pay $10 and there is not potable water there .
We stayed there 4 weeks ago . And for $10 for just site and not even potable water and way to much noise from wave runners. We won't be staying again

Hi Mick and welcome to the forum. Thanks for that update, things change so quick what was right a few weeks ago is no longer correct a week later. That's what makes these forums so useful, sharing up to date information.
