Road user tax for diesel powered vehicles is currently $52 / 1000km for vehicles up to 3500kg and then there is a sliding scale increasing the charge for vehicles according to their weight category. My Mitsubishi Canter spray truck has a 6000kg GVW and costs $57 / 1000km. I am currently paying on average about $1.40/lt for my diesel. 91 octane petrol is $2.17/lt So with the much better fuel consumption achieved by diesel powered commercial vehicles compared to petrol and the difference at the pump, it is still far cheaper to run a diesel in NZ despite the added road user tax.
Example. Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.7 Hemi Petrol. Optimistically could travel 1000km on 120lt petrol @ 2.17 = $261
Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.0 Diesel - similar performance - easily travel same distance on 80lt diesel @ $1.40 = $112 + $52 road user - Total = $164
You do not need to be a rocket scientist to work out why diesel is the preferred fuel foer any workhorse over here - SUV, Ute, or light truck.

As long as the mines keep buying at full price there is no reason for them to discount it on the big island. The Mazda eats 1lt/6km, that would equate to 167ltr per 1000km. 167lt @ $1.40 = $233.80 + $52 = $285.00. Diesel on the last Easter trip averaged $1.60lt, 167ltr x $1.60 = $267.20, it's still cheaper for fuel on the big island.
