"tanks" is back at 40 Mile Beach

Drop in and dribble on about nothing serious. Seriously a mad place to hang out. Better to avoid it if you're not in the mood!!! If you're determined to be sad, bad, mad & angry then move along!!!

"tanks" is back at 40 Mile Beach

Post by Keith Morris »

"tanks" here----
I have arrived back at 40 Mile Beach with "Russell" in command of the activity after his long, fast trip over ground that we have previously driven. "Russell" would prefer the driving rather than being shut in a cage and going for a plane ride.

I picked up the Sprinter on Monday just after lunchtime and as I don't like to drive at night time I decided to stay in Perth overnight. I made an early start on Tuesday am with shopping and fuel for the 1,700 km trip to return to the company of the Mob-up-there. The Sprinter presented no problems so I am pleased that the money was well spent and the Box-on-Wheels is running again.

I had plans to visit our Forum Friends in Geraldton however I arrived in Geraldton at 3:00pm. I considered that they would be at work at that time so I continued on towards Carnarvon (and the Goat population). I pulled over along the road at somewhere, place and location unknown for a sleep and van cooked meal. I decided that it was too much of a task to prepare and cook food, so feed "Russell" from a can, out with the Corn Flakes for myself, followed by a ham and salad sandwich.

I was back on the black stuff just as the sun came up and followed a road train for about 200 km towards Karratha. This was good and the speed was around 100 km/hr give or take a few hills, but the road train was my 'Roo bumper. There were few cattle on the road and the Road Train driver would warn me "Cattle on the road" when he saw them with his super bright headlights.

I met Bob & Bev at the Fortescue Roadhouse and had a short chat before rolling on to Karratha where I had mail waiting at the P.O.----my concern was that the P.O. people would return-to-sender and mail not collected within a few weeks. Remember that I had only left the campsite for 4 hours to have the Sprinter Diesel Pump replaced.

I am now back at 40 Mile campsite. Chris & Pete were a great help in getting me settled onto the old plot. All is as it was before, only I miss Bob & Bev, Ash & Wendy, Dot & George, Chuck & Catrina. All have gone on to find another wonderful place to visit and spend some hours of leisure.

I plan to stay at 40 Mile till the end of the season and then move on to "somewhere" to continue the holiday and meet with friends along the road.
Keith.

Unfortunately the flies are real bad this year. the net hat is a bonus if you can stand it.
While your that far away I'd recommend the Elachbutting Rock, slightly east of you. It's on the eastern edge of the wheat belt and from there it's mainly ded / open country , which I like.
We've just been there, and a few other rocks / parks on a wild flower trip looking for the orchids etc that are coming out now.

If you can get the Wheat Belt Trail maps ( 2 of ) they give good directions of where the relevant rocks etc are.
They're all free camps, take your rubbish out type, no water and a long drop toilets.

If you want more info PM me about that part of the country as we've done a few trips around there.

"tanks" here---The Perth mechanic used a computer to do the diagnostics to find out what was at fault.
[The Karratha mechanic also used a computer to tell me that the motor won't run and needed a new fuel pump].
The Perth bloke was on the ball and found the fuel pump was OK and that the problem was a faulty diesel cut-off valve.

"tanks" here---
Life at 40 Mile Beach Camp is quiet since Dot & George, Chuck & Catrina, and Bob & Bev [& Jack] departed for the South.

Pete, Chris & Chris, Chris & Gloria and Leon are still here and the plan is to move out around 17th September.
Harold & Bev are packing their lot ready for their departure this weekend.
Ron Mundy has taken his 5th wheel into Dampier, and Dave will be packing up soon ---the Season closure is at the end of September and Leon will be heading back to Perth a few days later.

Tanks and "Russell" are here till 16th September when we will head to Karratha for a BBQ and Lodge Meeting, and then, after a few days in town to fill up with diesel and food, I will head back to 40 Mile for a few more weeks of relaxation and Sundowner gatherings before heading to the next place.

There is still around 40 or 50 units here, with some campers leaving and others arriving each day. We had 8 new rigs arrive Saturday but they only stay for a few days, rather than a few months. Our "Happy Hours" are a quiet affair now days and only a few of us who get together for a few drinks and a chat. The waterfront sites are still in high demand and are not vacant for very long.
"Russell" enjoys his short walks several times a day and marks his spots as we move around the sites.
.
There was a fatal accident just South of the Gas Plant near Karratha last week. A caravan/car rollover is the only details we have.
