If you don't want to use the relay method, the cables from the solar to battery must be as direct and short as possible, with the controller mounted some where along this cable as close to the batteries as possible while still being practical for easy access. This is where the relay method beats the through controller method hands down, the relay is mounted within the battery box so the cabling is direct virtually from the solar panels to the battery, the control cables from the PL20/Dingo only need to be light weight cable and can be as long as necessary to put the controller in the spot you want it, 1.5mmsq 5 core trailer cable does the job fine, even good quality multi strand data cable would do, but that's heaps more expensive.
