Suggested camps for maiden voyage

William, We were just up that way a bit. There is a big new rest area just north of Gin Gin before the Mt Perry Road turn-off. Stayed at the Gin Gin Showgrounds, they charge by length there, 7.5m =$18/night 11m = $25 and over that $28 I think.
Free camped in the Monto Rail yards. Trains don't run there anymore. Or $20/night at the Showgrounds. Cania Gorge Top Tourist Resort $30/night with power less for unpowered. Mingo Crossing just been done up, everything is new but no idea on cost, and free camped at Ban Ban Springs rest area. That little trip took us 10 days but we were on a timeframe. You could also try Nanango Showgrounds but don't have a dog with you. We also found that some of the free camps around Gayndah have been shut down due to the actions of fruitpickers in whizzbangers according to one council bloke I spoke to.
All of the places I have mentioned would be a drive through except Monto Rail Yard.

Hi William,

We just came down from Cairns. We traveled from Cairns through Townsville. You have a couple of free park choices in this stretch, they are Blue water free park which is about 30 km north of Townsville and also Rollingstone, which is a little further north but away from the highway and has a dump point. There are others but I know you won't have a problem stopping at either of those and parking by yourself. Then inland to Charters towers, then onto the Gregory Development road and on past Clermont heading out 22km's past there to Theresa creek dam. Plenty of room there for you to turn around, showers, toilets and $10 per night. Great stop, we have stayed here several times. Take your red claw pots. From there we headed down through Emerald and on to Biloela to visit friends and stayed in Biloela Caravan Park. There are a couple of sites you would get in. From there we traveled down through to Kilkivan. On the southern side of Kilkivan you will find a good rest stop you will easily fit and turn around called Fat Hen Creek.
If you haven't already got WikiCamps then spend the 2 or 3 dollars for the app. I prefer it over the camps books but I do use both.

Thanks for the suggestions, actual eyes on descriptions are by far the best for me, I think I can plan a route around these.

Seems I might just have to buy a bloody smartphone at last, have been using the damn things to talk to people only.

Baggie, a bit too far, even for an experienced spanner holder !

+ 1 for the Wiki camps app. Margaret uses her Aldi tablet with wikicamps and it gives photo of the spots, comments from people who have been there and a Google maps live map to guide you. the map part can be a little slow updating sometimes so if you put important turns into the GPS will save needing to back up if you miss a turn

Hi William, Just read your post. Don't forget to include St Lawrence Recreational Reserve. Plenty of room, no unhitching, dump point, water. Very little shade......you will be able to test the output of those panels. We are there now and heading south tomorrow. Bigrig and trailer 17.5 metres. Will let you know what we find heading south. Also Big4 Mackay to top up water.....just be careful turning left into the place. When is your departure date? May meet you heading north, us south......need to pick up those studs.....want the bus looking smarter next year for our Karumba trip. Regards, Hans

It won't be before the end of the month I think, if you are not here before that I will grab your studs and we can arrange to meet up somewhere.

I know a busnut that has 5 acres at Bundaberg so will prop there for a bit, just got to be careful I don't get roped into another conversion !

I am thinking a nice easy first run to Tiaro first day, Bundy the day after and will plan a bit further as I get some time.

Still trying to finish trailer, maintenance man hurt his back yesterday so that will slow things a bit damn it.
