Budgeting

Drop in and dribble on about nothing serious. Seriously a mad place to hang out. Better to avoid it if you're not in the mood!!! If you're determined to be sad, bad, mad & angry then move along!!!

We averaged $201/week for diesel last year. :o
What price the sound of silence in the WA Wheatbelt? priceless
What price the views of the Whitsundays, the Daintree, Horizontal Falls in the Kimberley, priceless
What price the comradeship on the road , priceless
Well...maybe not priceless, but at $7.35 per day, you're getting it too cheap, you should be ashamed of yourself :)

At $7.35 per day you don't move often, I don't have a problem with that.
But what are your 'other' daily costs.
This thread that Shonky started has the beginnings of a good thread on "budgeting" while on the road
if its treated correctly.

no........ we'd need to start a new thread I think?
Shonky is one of a kind & has his own distinct style of exploring Australia and of his humour.
May I suggest we sign him up & lock up copyright to all his stories and experiences?
Ist episode......... "How to skin a rabbit, sell the meat and live off the skin"
Or ... "how to collect those spilt drops of fuel at the servo" ???
Come on Shonky it's your book we're writing!!

PS. We'll all meet you on the backroads.

Hi, all.

John and Kay - ashamed is like guilt, right? Seriously, we don't move that often, the rig is pretty well self contained, and we don't mind paying moderate campsite fees for a week at a time. Our quack told me to take it really easy. Speed relates inversely to comfort.

Bernie - The rig is a 2006 Talvor, with a manual 2.4ltr turbo diesel, and we flat tow a 2006 Getz.
Costs? Insurance for the Talvor -$600 p.a. Registration - $890 p.a. For the Getz, 3rd party insurance only, as it was recently belted by a severe hailstorm. Rego - guessing $500 p.a. The above total $2000, or $40 p.w. Just sold the house, so no rates, insurance, power or water bills. Probably buy two tyres in the next 12 mths, and maybe one service. Say another $1000, which brings the total to $60 weekly. campsites - early days, but a guess would be another $60 per week. Groceries - around $80 p.w.,so it's looking around $180 per week. Maybe this is a better format:

Insurance $600
registration
(two vehicles)$1390
servicing etc $1000
camp fees $3000
groceries $4000
Total $9990 p.a. or $200 p.w.
The above figures look totally ridiculous, hence all contributions, comparisons, criticisms and corrections are most welcome.

This may seem a little shonky but , I think the cost of running a motorhome, fully owned and no costs for operating the home base would be $500 per week. I am sure $25000 per year would cover all repairs, insurances, the occasional speeding fine, food, entertainment etc.
However, we are all different. Some may need more food, some more entertainment, some more vehicle repairs.
We are very different, we spent over $200 per week on maintenance alone last year. We hope to spend a lot less in 2013. Is that a lucky year? :)

Hi, all.
John and Kay.
Thanks for the feedback - would you mind summarising your expenses, very generally, in a format similar to the above? Incidentally, what type of rig do you have?

Dot - is it OK to call you Dotty? There was a chinese truckie in Wacol who piped petrol fumes into his truck's air filter as required. Can you ask Chuck if this would work with methane?

G'day Shonky,

No first hand knowledge regarding petrol fumes etc... & have given up on posting methane - even substitutes - inside balloons for obvious reasons.

Now working on emailing special orders - exorbitantly expensive - but such fun as you don't know what to expect when you open them!!
