I am having trouble with inverters in the van for some reason , I bought a 1000w Matson and it worked fine for about 3 months it's only used to power the laptop, phone, wifi and external hard drive but most commonly the laptop and ex hd then it stopped working.
The power light comes on and the red protection light flashes briefly no power produced though.
I also have Kogan 1000w inverter I got for the car to keep the laptop charged so I hooked it up worked for a week and stopped blew internal fuses which I replaced and they blew again.
I have had the generator running while using both inverters , they are rated to 15v so I thought they would be ok .
Cables are heavier than the supplied ones
I have made arrangements to return them under warranty however If I am doing something wrong I may only damage the replacements
Any ideas

Re: 1000w inverter problems
Was the generator powering a battery charger? Hopefully it wasn't connected to the same 240vac as the inverters were as a lot more than just the smoke from the inverters might have come out.

Re: 1000w inverter problems
The inverter was connected to the batteries (2x 100ah) the generator charges through the 240 system

Re: 1000w inverter problems
My thinking is/was that the inverters connected directly to the batteries would be shielded from over charge

Re: 1000w inverter problems
My suggestion would be not to use the inverters while using the generator. Use the 240 sockets, they should be live from the generator

Re: 1000w inverter problems
So the inverter powers the appliances you listed and this inverter is powered from the batteries. you also run a generator that powers the rest of the 240vac power outlets, but not the ones these particular appliances are plugged into, they are only powered via the inverter, have I got that part correct?peterf wrote:The inverter was connected to the batteries (2x 100ah) the generator charges through the 240 system

yes Terry the genny is only on for short periods to heat up the water otherwise it's solar

Re: 1000w inverter problems
OK, so when the generator is running, is there also a battery charger connected charging the batteries? If so, what brand/model is the charger? Is the generator an inverter type?
After spending the day trying to figure out why a combination of equipment has worked fine in the past but a combination of new equipment in a new set up won't work together, I'm starting to think that 2 switch mode devices, one charging the other an inverter, on the one battery don't get along too well. The inverter works fine on it's own, as does the charger on mains power, but power the charger from the inverter powered by a second battery and bugger all charge comes out. Some where along the line the manufacturer must have changed the something in the charger and it will have nothing to do with any frequency other than a clean 240vac 50hz supply.

Re: 1000w inverter problems
I'd say yes Terry, standard van setup once connected to a 240v source the batteries are charged. The genny is an inverter type. I don't know the brand of the charger it came with the van nor where it is in the van. The solar panels 2 x 90w on the roof and a portable 300w are connected to the batteries all the time. The house batteries are charged up most of the time by the solar panels so the genny I would think wouldn't be putting much into them.
