Bigpong's NON-Marketing!

Post by Greynomad »

A new upgrade of the Mac's OSX (v10.10) was announced coupla daze ago.
So I immediately downloaded it - two days into a new billing period - without checking file size.
It nudged 7GB! And my monthly plan is 8GB. I'd already used some of it, and when I connected next day two emails from Bigpong arrived: (1) I'd used 80% of my plan; (2) I'd used 100% of my plan, and access would be 'shaped' (slowed) to 64KB/s for the remainder of my current billing period (25 days!). :(
I spent THREE HOURS on the phone to Bigpong trying to work out a solution, after discovering that the connection with my credit union timed out before the log-in was completed. NO internet banking for a month... realised how dependent we are on our internet connection!
Finally agreed to pay an extra $15 to upgrade to bigger plan for the month... only to be told (after paying) that although it's a new plan the 'shaped' (slowed) access would remain. Stung again!

Friend arrived for a visit next day. With steam still issuing from my ears, I relayed my woes - and my opinion of Bigpong.
"Ah!" says he, "Did you know that if you ask for it, all consultants have the power to waive the 'shaping' penalty up to three times a year for each customer. [Should that be 'victim'?] But you have to ask! They won't volunteer it."
When I picked up my jaw, I immediately phoned back, and asked for the waiver. The lad on t'other end checked that I was not a serial offender (only used more than the then-4GB limit on first month of plan, several years ago), and waived the shaping immediately. Was back to normal Mobile Broadband speed within an hour!

The moral of the story:
Always ask if the call centre person can fix your problem before paying for an upgraded plan.

great news you got it sorted Ray
I wonder if there is a site to look up such "interactions" -not just with pigpond, but with banks, insurance companies - all the usual suspects.
They purposefully make it hard for joe average.

Whirlpool is a good place to start when looking for he best deal or how providers treat their customers. Personally I steer well clear of big pond, microsoft, telstra, google and apple, they are the biggest and most expensive rips off on the planet. you can save a lot of money and keep your privacy by avoiding these corrupt corporations.

As for banks, left the big 4 decades ago and again have saved a lot of money not having to pay their exorbitant chargers interest rates and pathetic service. When ti come to insurance, we don't have much choice but have found the RACT in Tas, has the best insurance rates around and also the best club services.

A bit of a mystery to me - more like misery to you - but on occasions when I have exceeded my data allowance on the mobile router and it slows, I just go online and move up to a bigger data plan then reduce it again the next month. If not immediately, at least by midnight, the service speed is back to normal. I am with Bigpond.

That's what they swindled me into... to bump the existing plan to the next level would have cost me another $50!
Swapping to a different plan cost me $15 more... then I was told the slowed connection would not be lifted until the new plan came into effect at the end of the current billing period!

I believe you have been misinformed - that simply is not the case when I upgrade the plan, which I invariably do when we go away. I know that I was given good advice when I purchased the plan - that advice was to sign up for the 1gb and increase or drop back the plan as required. The trick there is that you can't go back to a lesser plan than you originally signed up to. So when we are not on longer trips I am only paying the absolute minimum; sufficient to cover weekend trips and the like.
