Save everything and do a cold reboot* as the puter is thinking (rightly or wrongly) that something is still open and preventing your intended operation. Remember Dot, it is only a machine and similar to most males, capable of only doing onesies**, but very good at that.
dawg (*shut down and restart your computer. **multitasking is just doing many onesies quickly.
)
PS go online and run housecall free virus detection to see if you are infected.

The Word document you are trying to open is already open some where on your computer. if you left click on the word icon in the toolbar it will give a preview of all the Word documents already open, mouse over the preview and it will give a full screen display, when you find the one you are looking for, left click will bring it up as the page you are working on.
if you are trying to open a document you have saved but not yet closed, to see if it was all saved, the system will not let you do it as there would be 2 folders with the same address open and confusion would cause a system crash. Instead, highlight the page you wish to be sure is saved, open a new word document and right click/save to the new document, give it a different name, even if it's v1 at the end of the name, then save that. Now close the original, check if the saved version is good, if it is, delete the v1 version.
Next time, to save the issues reoccurring, save the changes the "save as" the same name and v1 or 2 or what ever number updates you had made, then each version will be there for future reference and as a fall back should anything go astray with the current document. all the older saved versions can be deleted when no longer required.

Dot,
In word, there is an action that hasn't completed.
It could be a print request, or spell checker with a correction suggestion that needs to be completed.
There will be an open 'action' window/pane that needs to be closed.
