Yes it does go off but you should be ok at 6 months. If you are concerned you could add some fuel conditioner like moreys diesel additive or any other type. If you have room in the tank you could top it up when you add the conditioner. This will help agitate the fuel.

Very cold weather or water in the tank and you will have problems. In the cold weather summer fuel will wax and block the pickup pipe and filter, warm the tank till it's comfortable to touch hot, then add a few litres of kero and the problem should be solved, winter fuel in summer just doesn't go as far so the fuel economy will appear fairly poor. Algae growth from water in the fuel is a different story, it will block the pick up pipe and coat the filters, a fuel additive in a strong enough dose will kill it, then it just blocks the pick up pipe and clogs the fuel filter. The only fix, drain the tank, kill the weeds with the diesel, refill the tank and add lots of fuel conditioner, carry a bundle of spare filters and change the filter every time to performance drops off compared to normal till the system has removed all the algae, this may take two tanks of fuel as the algae will attach itself to anywhere it can find, including the float for the fuel level gauge.
If you run a fuel conditioner in every 3rd tank of fuel and regularly drain water traps and the bottom of the fuel tank the water/algae problem will never occur, running bio diesel has the same effect as the acetone removes the water and algae or wax doesn't grow in bio diesel, only dino diesel.

If you can add a glass bottomed filter you should be able to see anything floating or rubbish that's in the system especially if maintenance hasn't been good in the past.
