recommendations for hot water service.

Post by Craig »

Hi all,
It would appear that the hot water service has reached its retirement date. It is leaking from somewhere under the polystyrene insulation and can only assume it is terminal as the pipe fittings are dry. I won't know exactly where until the unit is removed. :(
So the question is instant or tank? Also which one of you pointed the bone at me??

What make/model is it Craig?
Doesn't sound good though.
I think the tank on mine has a coating on the inside of it and if yours is the same & that coating is stuffed then it's EOL. (EndOfLife)
Was yours 240V as well as gas?
I've seen some good deals on new ones so probably not worth just renewing the tank.

Hi Bruce,
Yes, I pretty much know it's BER. I am weighing up my options, instant hot water or the suburban SW6DEA. They are similar price but I do like the idea of having electric heating element with the suburban.

We went with a new suburban last year with the electric element. The old one was a PITA to consistently light, and with the 240 availabe, its another option. When on mains water and running both gas and 240 we can get almost 10 min out of a shower before it gets a bit too cold, probably get longer if I didnt like a bit of pressure. The 240 element will of course also run off the lithiums..

Thanks Martin, that's the feedback I wanted to hear. I rang George Day Caravans today and they will do a deal at $809. I liked the sound of the instant hot water system but I didn't like the only heating source being gas. I paid $60 for a gas refill in sandstone last time we were there. So I am trying to move away from the gas requirement.

I bought it today and will finish the install tomorrow. I did expect it to be soft wired though.

Craig when you got the old one out could you see where the leak was coming from?
Did you check the anode? was it OK?
I wonder did it have the wrong one in it? Apparently there are two distinct different ones for different applications.
Can you elaborate on what you meant by "soft wired"?
You'll need to run 240V & 12V wires from the unit to the control switches. Where are you locating the switches?
I put mine within reach of the bed...
Reason?
Well my navigator MUST have a shower in every morning & with one eye open I can start the hot water up...........
Allows time to discuss the days activities or anything else that pops up.

Yes the 240v is next to my side of the bed too. I can boost the overnight gas heat before I lurch in and have heaps of hot....

Yes,
Yes and yes,
No it wasn't the wrong one. I only use the suburban recommended anode and have done so religiously for 8 years.
Soft wired means it can be simply plugged in.
Switch is located in the same spot as the last one. I will not be relocating it.
