I think it boils down to whether I go the whole hog and fit the split air con, which then means 300AH lithiums (?) and ~1kw solar. About $4000 extra to the fitout but can leave the genny at home and enjoy 5* travel.

Re: 240v fridge - Samsung, F&P or Hisense?
Hi John not into the techy stuff BUT for info on 240v fridge running in a RV.
When I bought my bus it already had a old 240v LG fridge. It had had a workout as it had dents etc and looked its age and apparently had been in the bus since new and the bus was converted (about 10 years I think)
The previous owner was as rough as SALT and drove like a maniac (I did a trip to Brisbane and back for the rego change and I was glad to get out when we got back but that's another story).
I have had the bus nearly 5 years and most of that has been on the road and the fridge is still working perfectly. I have been threatening to get a new one but the bugger keeps going.
I have a 2.4kw inverter that runs 24/7 and the inverter uses more power than the fridge so I am looking at getting a dedicated small inverter for the fridge and just running the big one during the day for hot water/cooking etc. I need it on during the day as the hot water is my dump load LOL.
I estimate that my fridge would use less than 30Ah @24v as my total daily av use is about 60Ah @24v and the inverter on idle uses 1.4A 24 X 1.4 = 33.6Ah.
Cooking only uses about 5Ah max and that is for Bacon and eggs /toast /coffee and perhaps a another coffee during the day and sometimes a couple of pies in the pie maker.
I went to the house hold inverter aircon and find it magic. It uses very little power and normally my solar carries the aircon and I still charge. 720w of solar.
I dont really hear the fridge during the night.
Regards
Brian

Re: 240v fridge - Samsung, F&P or Hisense?
Thanks Brian, good to know some real world figures, sounds like there's hope for me yet. I'd love to squeeze an air con in but we'll see. These darn Coasters are about half a meter too short. Will feel like the Lunar module inside by the time I finished.
Terry/George, I emailed Hisense re the startup current on their 220L fridge. 1.8amps they reckon.
Sounds a bit low to me. So about 450 watts on start up. Should be safe with a dedicated 700w PS for the fridge.
Off to read a million words on Lithiums. Seems I would be mad not to use them.
So far I reckon a 300AH Winston pack (~50% DOD if I don't fit the air con), cell monitor and balancer.
960 watts driving it all and a 40A charger for backup. Will leave the genny at home.
Can't be that hard.

Is that a 300ah on 12 or 24v?

12v system. Solar should run an inverter split.
Not a big power user. Never liked drawing big loads through inverters.
Happy with gas for heating. Like to keep it humble where I can.

Have you considered having the fridge converted to run on a 12v compressor?
We had this in a previous van and it was quite satisfactory.
We had a 1200W inverter but only used it for the microwave, toaster, jug and electric blankets.
The inverter was only turned on when we wanted to use it as this enabled us to avoid the standby load.

That's a neat trick. Can you elaborate. Is it DIY?

An out moded practice these days as the household fridges are so much better these days they use less power including the inverter losses than the 12v compressor models Even with the BD50 compressor and condenser package they struggle about the high 30's ambient, where the household fridge straight out of the box is built to handle 43*C

Certainly not DIY.
I do not know what the cost of the conversion was as the van was all setup when we bought it.
The only problem we experienced was that it caused interference in our HF radio.
