Yeah, but what I meant is if you slow down to let a truck overtake before it is able then you slow the truck down also & then they have to get up to speed to overtake, so better to maintain speed until they go out to overtake & then slow down.

In our travels it would appear that the majority of passing lanes in the country areas are at the start of hills. That being the case then it is perhaps understandable why some GN's might feel the need to increase their revs, & thereby their speed, to keep up their own momentum on these hills.
NO, we don't need to do this... our tug pulls our combination effortlessly!

I think one of the problems is that there is no training or advice to folk who suddenly change from a lifetime driving a Suzuki Alto to driving a sometimes inadequate tow vehicle with an oversized caravan.
The highway is a different and dangerous beast, but our learner driver testing cares more about whether you can park a car than whether you can survive a long distance country trip. IMHO - always Humble and proud of it

We know that statement to be true as I reckon he could have pulled us up a few inclines when the engine was not going to the best of her abilities.Chuck wrote:In our travels it would appear that the majority of passing lanes in the country areas are at the start of hills. Re: I've got to rant! The Bruce!
Back to the original rant. I remember many parts of the Bruce highway as being totally impossible for a caravan to get out of the way of trucks. The passing lanes were few and far between and rarely gave enough space for a couple of road trains to overtake us. Most of this single lane (each way) track (doesn't feel like a highway to us) has edges that actually slope down the sides quite dramatically and if you slowly move to the edges to give a trucky a chance, the van and car would have ended up rolled over in a ditch. SO the truckies who behave so badly should be taken out in a car and van combo and made to suffer the issues of the great big roadtrains that terrorise the average vanners.
Perhaps then such terrors would not be as prevalent on that road. Until then, I am trying to avoid the Bruce with a vengeance. I found it the most terrifying road that we have travelled on. To answer previous thought, we have both done the tow-ed course and are quite competent with our caravan combo. I regularly encourage new caravan owners to complete that course, but at the current price of around $700 per couple for a weekend it is quite dear. Still cheaper than a life.

Going back a long way there Bruce. I remember those days myself. They kept us busy attending accidents on the Hume goat track.

The Princes Hwy hasn't improved much since those days.
