Same thing happend to mine...had to get a new one, but I complained to Amazon and they gave me a discount. Is it the one with the keyboard at the bottom? That was the one I had and I liked it better than the one I have now. They've discontinued those.

I'd best treat mine with kid gloves then as mine is the same model. Love the whole Kindle thing, so easy to just pick up and you are straight back into where you left off, no searching through lost page markers, certainly makes reading more enjoyable.
So the 24 hr recharge and reset didn't work for you Chuck?

Nah, Terry, even tried tickling it but still no luck.
Recall seeing something yesterday when I was goodling it.... about how to remove the rear cover to... hopefully to access the battery. Might see if I can find that, remove the battery & then reinstall it. See if that does any good.
At the moment I have daughter's 'i' thingy - about the same size as the DX. She downloaded the Kindle ap so now, at least, I can access continue reading. She turned it on & brought the Kindle stuff onto the screen with all my books in order of purchase so all I have to do is select the book I want then when I put it down just pull the magnetic cover over it & it goes into sleep mode. Almost as good as the DX starting back up again at the page you closed it down.
Even I can manage not to stuff that up - for the time being.

Re: My Amazon Kindle just died.
Just fixed it !!
Spent ages on Google looking for how to get the back cover off, but obviously wasn't using the correct words in the question.
Eventually got it right & asked "How to remove rear cover of Kindle DX"
The options included a video of how to do it.
Did it & found the problem to be the battery was slightly loose in the cradle.
Managed to hold the battery in place whilst simultaneously tightening the screws. (settle Dot)
Voila... it werkin!

Re: My Amazon Kindle just died.
My Kindle Fire (colour screen) is good, but wifi only.
Downloading books direct from Amazon is a pain in the ar$e!
However, so long as I can access the books on the interweb (www.gutenberg.org) I can transfer them from our MacBook Pro.
After 2 years, the speakers suddenly quit. Headphones plug still working, though.
Shoulda waited & saved up more $$$ to buy the iPad with wifi AND 4G...
