Confusing battery levels (readings)

Post by Dot »

I have two 200ah batteries I run the 1500w inverter mainly for the computer, also the bushman fridge/freezer and the electrical controls for the fridge. The voltage for the batteries when the solar goes is around 12,7, in the morning after keeping the bushman running and a few leds in the evening is around 12.5.My battery monitor only reliably tells me the voltage, so I am uncertain as to the amount of charge remaining in the batteries .I have three 80w panels.Q how do know what the real capacity of the batteries are, do I need a better monitor, more solar or more info. Thanks for any help.

Do you have a battery monitor with a shunt the shunt measure the small of amp so it should tell you how many amp hours you have used and tell you how much solar you are getting into the batteries as well the monitor will tell the state of charge it should this in percentage so if it said below 50/% your in trouble

You need a Victron 700BMV http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Victron-Prec ... 43db524af7 This will tell you what you used and what you have put back in, then you will know what you really need, more solar, better batteries or anther method of charging as well as the solar. Voltage is rather meaningless, charging will always read high, heavy discharge will read low. 12.7v while charging is far too low for lead acid batteries, it should be over 14v, 14.4v to 14.7v depending on the AGM battery type and 14.8v for flooded cell and 16v for equalise once every 3 mths.

You need to find out how much the fridge draw in amp plus the freezer and any other to total up the daily use because if you more that the solar put in you have two options more solar input or run the generator longer to use more fuel ?

He who asked the Q has now got all the specs on all the stuff to see what they use plus is going to get that monitor thing that Terry suggested so thank you everyone x

That 'monitor thing' that T1 suggested will provide answers to most of your questions Dot. Gman will just have to do a few calculations now and all will be revealed.

Dot, Bandit is just fine at the mo'. He is presently asleep on the lounge room floor waiting for me to take him for his daily walk.
