HOT COLD WATER

Post by Dot »

This is an issue in the house.. Our water pipes are in the ceiling but what gets me is that they are plastic (Hepworth) In summer when you turn the cold tap on the water temp is hotter than the hot from the tank.. With all the safety things why would this be allowed?? We built the house 14 yrs ago. The ceiling is insulated and also has 2 whirly things in the roof.

Should only be hot for the small amount of time that the water in the ceiling pipes is replaced by the cold water from the council mains. problem solved :D

When we moved into our new house 7 years ago hot water was connected to one of the toilets. It took me a while to decide to get the plumber back!

The next hot day I am going to measure the amount that comes through hot before the cold comes through.. We are on tank water but that is in an underground tank and it's freezing, I would have thought that with all the safety things with kid locks and power point covers that the extreme temp would be frowned upon, it is extremely hot as you can imagine. It would burn anyone that didn't know about it..

Dot,

We had the reverse effect when we changed our hot water tank - 350L - to a gas instant type. New machine on the outside wall of the bathroom... on the other side of the house to the kitchen. Takes about 3 minutes of running water from the hot tap before it even gets warm.

Two options:

1... Put another instant gas hot water system on the garage wall, adjacent to the kitchen, or...

2... Clad the hot water pipes in the ceiling so the hot water in them stays reasonably hot all day.

So far we've done nothing... both will cost $$$ !!

Meanwhile, in these current temps, the hose from the van to the water mains produces scalding hot water out of the cold tap for about 40 seconds... then it's ok. :D

Hi Dot,

We have exactly the same problem and find it necessary to warn children to let the tap run for an extended time prior to putting hands under the running water. To my way of thinking the use of black poly in the roof for cold water should not be allowed.

It is quite strange that it is allowed under the OH&S, very dangerous indeed.. By the way George, how's the leg these days?

We built a house in Cairns in 2001 and the builder ran the pipework through the roof space. It did question them about this and their reply was that it made it easy to repair leaks. At times steam vapour would come off the water coming from the cold water tap. So I totally agree Dot, there should be precautions put in place to prevent this.

Is it normal practice now to put the pipes in the roof? All our houses have had them under the floor. In Lightening Ridge, the hot tap is the cold and the cold tap is the hot. This because all the water comes up from the artesian basin at 41.5degC so they store i in the hot water cyl to cool. hot water up there is virtually limitless but the cold runs out real quick

Why not put a return pipe from the last fitting in the plumbing system back to the water tank with a tap that is easily accessible. This way the water flow can be regulated slow enough to stop the water trapped in the pipes getting too hot, it can also be shut off in winter when no longer required.

Same at Birdsville. They have a separate hot water service running around town from the artesian bore. It has to be cooled first cause it comes out of the ground at close to boiling point
