Got a portable satellite system now... but

Post by Chuck »

OK. Got bloody sick & tired of trying to get the auto rooftop dish working - still not locking on to anything - so stuff it, bought an Access portable system minus the Satking box along with the "Marriage Saver" little tv tuner gizmo.

All works really well outside the van when setting it up.

Problem now is how to get the cable inside the van to connect to the Satking box which is located roughly midway along the off side & in one of the overhead cupboards above where I sit... this is where all the cabling from the defunct rooftop anchor is located. The door therefore needs to be open when operating it.

Ideally, having it on a new shelf below the cupboard would be ideal with a small hole into the base of said cupboard for the existing cabling.

Now then, I do recall seeing a cable connector some time ago that would join an external cable to an internal one through the wall of the van ... know what I mean? At our present location in the Atherton Tablelands there is nothing/nowhere to find one so will have to venture further afield, possibly into Cairns.

Anyone know of this connector & where to get one or something easier/simpler to get the connection into the van?

I suppose photo's of where the box is now & where I'd like it would help.

Will see if I can take a cupla pics & post them.

Chuck,
Three avenues to explore:
1. The Wanderer ads
2. Jaycar (website has good illust catalogue, but search engine throws up a lot of irrelevant stuff)
3. Kogan (good search engine)

Good luck...
Regards & God bless,

Chuck, I had a quick search for bulkhead connectors but didn't find what I was looking for. I will ask the radio boffins at work.
Have a look here and see if it is what you need.

Thanks for the info, have now ordered one from Bruce's eBay link.

Not sure if I could tell if the vertical alignment of the rooftop dish is off or not, at the moment it just goes up, does it's little dance & shuts down. Our present parking situation would prevent it working anyway due to close proximity of trees. When we eventually move - which might not be for another 18 months - then will give it another chance, if it doesn't work it will remain permanently down & just look good. The portable unit will do just fine.

One of the annoying things I'd noticed when it was working was that it would loose signal fairly early in a windy condition whilst the portable units - generally securely placed in an appropriate location would continue working 'ad infinitum'.
