Steve, I would imagine the only reason we are granted a lease over public land is because it is for club members only, if it was to be a commercial enterprise I would think caravan park rules and regulations would apply and it would be a completely different ball game. Besides that the club is a non profit organisation.

It's hard to imagine that a good business model for a CMCA CP would deny access to non members - maybe there could be substantial benefits for members but why would the organisation throw away the opportunity to collect revenue on otherwise vacant sites from non members?

I could be completely wrong here, but from what I remember the CMCA members were covered by an insurance policy against negligence when attending any sanctioned CMCA event. This included club events and required each attending member to sign in on arrival, the rallies work the same way. I'm guessing this will be extended to these low cost camp areas and therefore only members could stay there as only members would be covered by this insurance. The other factor is the big stick, the CMCA can use the big stick on members by suspending their membership if they do the wrong thing, what big stick could they use on a non member who stepped outside the lines? I'd guess the financial side of the equation is of little concern to the club, they are looking to improve membership via improved member benefits, just like any other club does and I think in this case they have a winning formula.

Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia (CMCA) has opened its first CMCA RV Park at Ingham, North Queensland, and in the process is introducing an innovative new concept of recreational vehicle (RV) accommodation in Australia.

CMCA RV Parks provide low-cost, no-frills accommodation for CMCA members whose vehicles meet the requirements of the CMCA Self Contained Vehicle (SCV) Policy. In response to the growing need for basic accommodation for self-contained vehicles that can generate their own energy needs, CMCA RV Parks provide access to a secure place to park, potable water and dump points to offload black and grey water. CMCA RV Parks are a managed accommodation facility with fully trained volunteer custodians who live on site to oversee the day-to-day activities and to implement park rules.

“CMCA RV parks are providing a viable alternative to the RV accommodation dynamic at a time when baby boomers are entering the RV tourism market in ever increasing numbers.” said CMCA chairman Mr Garry Lee, “We are developing a new style of accommodation to meet the needs of our members who have invested in vehicle technology that makes them the most environmentally friendly self-drive tourists in Australia.”

Mr Lee pointed out that CMCA RV Park - Ingham can accommodate up to 50 vehicles and has the potential to generate more than $1 million in tourism spend for the local community. CMCA has leased the property from the Hinchinbrook Shire Council and has spent more than $60,000 within the local community installing a shelter shed, fencing, a dump point, sealed driveway and the planting of more than 140 trees.

“CMCA aims to establish eighty of these high-quality RV facilities across Australia over the next five years and we are currently engaged with over fifty councils in five states and territories.” said Mr Lee. “We are gaining enormous support from local government as we offer low impact, environmentally friendly tourism facilities, mainly in smaller regional locations, that deliver quadruple bottom line benefits for the community, at absolutely no cost to the Council.”

According to the Leave no trace requirements the bucket under the water outlet is not acceptable so what will the caretakers do when one of these drop in to stay??

All the camps will have a dump point & potable water.

What's the bet if the CMCA set up one of these RV Parks in a town, the local council will then ban free/low cost camping at all other locations in their jurisdiction. It will then be tough cheddar if you aren't a CMCA member.

I've been told that there is some sort of mobile container [on wheels] that can be attached to your grey water outlet [fittings available at Bunnings]. The caretaker has some of these.
