Hardly a God song when you read the words. Having said that I haven't worked out what it all means.

Seems like they have taken snippets from the Bible, but they don't gel together.

Leonard Cohen is both a poet and song writer, a bit like Bob Dylan but Leonard Cohen does a better delivery. Simply because some sections within the lyric coincide with some things written in your bible (versions differ) doesn't mean they are snippets from any bible, poetry rarely makes total sense but it is still enjoyed by millions

I like the second interpretation best but both are a good analogy. The use of a familiar story line is a common thing used by artists in many disciplines, in this one the poet/song writer uses bits of different biblical stories but not quite the way they were told in the bible.
It was the different presentation of this song that caught my interest so I thought I'd share it. Time for a new song, anyone wanna have a crack at it.... or should I have another go, but it will probably end up just as controversial
