Margaret would be better doing that Terry but make sure she has her blouse unbuttoned a tad more than usual.

Re: Towing
T1, Our straps have the triangle bit but according to the nice officer they don't have a high enough weight rating. It was the bit that goes around the top of the wheel/tyre that seemed to cause the most concern.
Will go to the new website http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/roads/safety-rules/??????? and see what I can find in there.
The National Load Restraint Guide can be found
here > http://www.ntc.gov.au/Media/Reports/(E6 ... 50782).pdf , if anyone is interested. all 268 pages of it. but it is a free download, unlike Australian Standards.
(E62BE286-4870-ED95-1914-1A70F3250782).pdf is full title after Media/Reports/ but the link won't copy correctly for me.
Bruce, What am I doing wrong ???

Re: Towing
We've gone completely the opposite direction: minimalist.
(Refer to avatar.)
Our Jimny ('Jim the Junior Jeep') as purchased weighed 1060kg... then we removed the back seat, saving 50kg, replacing it with a 16mm marine ply floor, using the original seat's mounting points. Thus no ingress of H2O when crossing creeks.
We purchased a 300kg single-axle Tilta-trailer. Total towed weight: 1310kg, plus whatever we carry in the back of Jim.
Towing vehicle: Winnie Explorer, 8100kg, 6.5 litre turbo diesel V8. Towing Capacity: waaaay more than 1310kg. (Can't remember the exact figure, and I'm not making a special trip to Girt to find out!)
BTW: In Victoria, car carrying trailers are - by definition - dual-axle. Our single-axle model is therefore registered as a box-trailer.
When travelling through NSW not long after completing our rig with the trailer purchase - and using the front-wheel-only ratchet tie-downs as supplied by the manufacturer - we had to pull in to a Heavy Vehicle Inspection point. (With SWMBO driving we always have to pull in for a licence check - rarely happens when I'm driving.)
The Nice Man informed me that in their colony we are required to tie down the rear of the vehicle as well. I pointed out that in all other colonies, the manufacturer's front-wheel tie-downs are accepted as sufficient. He would not be persuaded. Wanted me to detour into nearest town & purchase the required 2500kg ratchet strap (for a 1010kg car?) & report back within 24 hours! I explained that we were due in Canberra that night for a wedding next day, so he relented & said we could report to Canberra Police Station instead... but he was phoning ahead with our details, and if we didn't turn up within 48 hours, we'd get a bung in the mail for (I think) $350 or so! Lovely man...
We've used it once: to drive to Canberra Police Station to show them the thing wrapped around the towbar & tethered to both wheel-tracks! (Fat lot of 'securing' that's going to do!)
I still carry the extra 'NSW Strap' just in case...

Re: Towing
In Qld Ray if you remove the rear seats you need a compliance plate saying so .
And also need the rear of the car secured .

Re: Towing
Ray, The lovely NSW officer insisted that I install the 2500kg strap that I had purchased (Thankyou Mr Aldi for impulse buying). That saved me a few dollars that I wasn't planning on spending. I think the information given by Mr Tilta Trailers possibly doesn't comply with any of the regulations anywhere. But better safe than sorry, I just want to be compliant cos I'm running out of points. I am yet to check the requirements of the Qld load restraints, which I assume will be no less than the National one. I should have mentioned earlier that we have a Tilta similar to yours.
Bernie, I believe that you are correct, the rear of the car must be secured.

Bruce, What am I doing wrong ???
It has to be marked on the strap plus there is a tracer line from memory to identify it is a rated strap. I bought some from Supercheap or some where similar only to discover they didn't have the triangle locking bit, useless for anything but bundling stuff together.
Don't they make special tie down straps with a piece that goes over the tyre so you can clamp down one front wheel and one rear wheel and then it's legal, have to check out a car carrier next time I see one and look at the vehicle securing method. I know they don't pull down on the suspension but rather anchor the wheels, saves the vehicle cutting the straps.

Re: Towing
I was going to car down where all the motor traders are and ask one of the car carrier guys where they get their straps from. The straps that Tilta supply are rated, but only to 350 kg and NSW Highway Patrol reckon they are non-compliant. I drive through Forbes too many times a year to be getting booked every now and then. I just want the right stuff.
Will post whatever I find
Kappy, I'm sorry I hijacked your thread.

Re: Towing
Things sure have changed. We used to carry about 30 lengths of 5/8" silver rope with a steel homemade hook on one end.
One on each corner of each car & away we went.
Cars will only ever go in 2 directions ... forward or to the low side of the road. (on a car carrier)

Re: Towing
Dont the pro car carrier vultures use a web that goes over a wheel or two?
The actual body isn't held down directly -allowing some movement of suspension and stopping the "twang"
