Waeco HDC 190 and BD50F compressor

Post by bobk »

Good day all,
I have been having a bit of trouble with our fridge above, and in the process of determining my exact problem and a possible fix, I came across this: manins.net.au/truck_camper/danfoss_instructions.pdf. It has good info including a circuit which tells you where you can put an led, which if there is a problem, will flash a code. I don't think it covers every possibility though. I have installed the diode on a length of wire and started the fridge. It is still pulling down (and of course taking for bloody ever) so I am waiting for a fail which may fit the codes. Long story short is that the fridge and freezer were just below ambient a day or two ago (van is not being used but is powered), so I am suspecting the thermostat. I have long thought the hysteresis of the thermostat was too wide so that may be another indicator.

Does your model have the defrost cycle? seems to be an issue with the system not returning to normal run mode after a defrost cycle. Also, with a multimeter, check the voltage on the leads going to the compressor to determine if there is a voltage drop problem somewhere. A sewing needle through the cable will give you a contact point for voltage measurement.

Thanks Terry for your reply, Chuck, I'm not so sure; but I do remember doing codes, much earlier than our careers, whilst in the Scouts. You know dit dah is A, dah dit dit dit is B, dah dit dah dit....oh well you know. Terry the voltage is good, I have decided for the sake of $66.00 to pull the fridge out and deliver it to the Waeco fixers on Port Wakefield Rd just up from Highway One park. For that I get a diagnosis, and after that probably will need a bank loan. Ha. I have removed it and just waiting for a trailer. Incidentally the code flash is 3 flashes which indicates a motor start error. According to the info I have this could be caused by excessive differential pressure (no Chuck this does not mean odd sized tyres on the 4WD) or a 'blocked' rotor. But on talking to the techo at the Waeco place, it could be the electronic module as well. Will wait and see. Oh and there is nothing about defrost in the literature that I have.

Picked up the fridge from the fixers today and brought it home but it isn't installed yet. They replaced the electronic module beside the compressor, finding that it intermittently produced the three flash code on the led. They also replaced the compressor cooling fan as it wasn't working. The fridge is good on the test bench with the new electronic module installed and they provided a data log to show the results. Saturday will hopefully see the fridge reinstalled and then it will get the in-house test. Cost $461 incl gst for what they did, with $289 for the electronic module as part of that. No complaint about that.

Well the fridge is installed, and the temperatures appear good, (just wish I had a data logger like the repair bloke) (I did leave the LED coder attached just in case) and I've got a big cheesey grin just like Chucks avatar thingy. Now we just need to be able to get away to use it. :D :D

Fridge temps still good with ice droplets over the whole evaporator area. Waeco man said that indicates full gas but I never ever saw that on Chuck. Yeah Dot, we miss em too.

Hi Bob, It pays to keep an eye on the Electronic Module cooling fan the reason being the BD50F Compressors can get fairly in in High Ambient Temps and if the Fan Stops working it can cause the Compressor/Electronic Unit to Fail. I carry a few spare Fans and the best ones are the Ball Bearing Not the Bushed ones. We have a 220 litre Waeco and if you want less trouble Thermostat wise fit an LED Readout Electronic unit with incorporated Sensor wire. I have also fitted one of these to the Traiblaza Bush Fridge/Freezer which also has a Danfoss BD35F compressor assy. Cheers Kev.
