Hankooks all round Jon. I don't think the tyre was to blame I think the lock ring was the cause.

Mike I do doubt if the ring was the fault.
I know you've been into trucks like me so I'm probably not telling you much you don't know but once the air pressure blows the bead out, it virtually locks the ring in under the bead. Terry can probably remember using a hammer & chisel to drive the bead in to get his tyre off the rim at Muckinup?
If it was one of those MUCH older two (or 3?) piece rings then, yes, it could be the problem.

Lucky finding a place nearby to pull over. Seems they are reducing pull over points these days. Cuts down a lot of escape routes with Aramco and cabling. Coming down from Coffs when we started our first trip a bottom radiator hose popped off near drowning the bride who was following with green crap, lucky it was her and not some innocent driver. Finally found a dusty area where the road works were being carried out to pull over. Just after that it was all single lane for ages which would have been a disaster.

Lock rings shoulf fail pretty much straight after the installation, not randomly way down the road.....
So glad you and Suzy got out OK and can tell the tale, a blowout on the steer is a nightmare for us Heavy/casual drivers

It was a 2 piece ring type of wheel. I think it will always be a guess and I will probably never really know what happened first IE the tyre blowing or the ring letting go.

Looking at the wheel in the light of day there is an old gouge, definitely not caused yesterday, right along the edge of the rim where the lock ring sits. It is about 40 mm long and about 3-4 mm deep and I reckon this was likely the problem as the locking ring would not sit tightly in this area.

I had a light fall in the front wheel of my push bike one day ( we used to attach them to the forks and it vibrated down and twisted around and took all the spokes out). Was doing over 70MPH (so the car behind that picked me up said) there was little left of the front wheel and the whole bike was sort off out of alignment.
That was the last time my old man gave me a hiding as I was in the right mood to stand up to him and I won so he got very tame after that, but it was the last time I rode a bike till a few years ago.

Yes Shirley I am still looking for another rim.

I am on my way to the Canberra Rally at the moment and George Jenkins (Newcastle George) has kindly lent me a spare for the trip.

Shirley MY head is tougher than steel. I have proved it a few times ask Margaret as I gave her a scare while working on their cleanup.
Should have been a 10 minute smoko but OH NO of to hospital for you then the buggers would not let me out.
Now days a little egg on your head and a few scratches and you are dying. Bloody soft buggers now days either that or they need patients to bring their tally up.
I wanted the ambulance to take me back but they refused but then, I did have a nice girl holding my hand so I don't get that often so decide to lay back and enjoy.
Had some nice nurses as well and had a few chats during the nights to break their boredom. I don't sleep much so every time they came around I was waiting LOL.
