Queenslanders travelling down through Victoria

Post by Glenn »

We are currently just south of Dubbo on our way down to meet the Spirit of Tassie after checking out the GOR. We have never been in Victoria before and are at the point of deciding which route to take us south. Other considerations on the route chosen is what tourist spots that we can visit on the way down.

Should we go via Wagga, Albury and down the Hume Hwy or should we cross the border at Tocumwal / Cobram and then Shepparton, Bendigo and Ballarat, or should we cross over at Echuca. I believe that some of the Murray River crossings are by ferry which we would like to stay away from.

I believe there are some good mining spots /displays in Ballarat but that is the extent of my tourist information in that state.

We would appreciate everyone's feedback.

There is a lady named Ros here, she and her Boss Ivan live in Ballarat, Ros loves ironing and will invite you there for a cuppa and some of her lemon slice.. Othere more travelled will give their pref routes. but I guess it depends on what your interests are..

The ones you mention are all bridge crossings.
Cobram Shepparton, Bendigo, Ballarat would be my choice.

Some say to view the GOR from the Geelong end and head towards Warrnambool so you are on that side of the road. (not if the navigator may get nervous!)
As you are eventually leaving Melbourne for Tassie maybe cut across from West Wylong to Hay (Museum), Echuca, & weave your way towards Stawell, travel through the Grampians & end up at Warrnambool & do the GOR from that end arriving in Melb in time to board the canoe.
Do you have plans about which way you are going back up to Qld?
There are so many choices.........
How long before boarding the ferry?

Ballarat is great if you are into lots of history (Gold) and lovely old buildings etc. and a nice cuppa and lemon slice awaits in Ballarat, Bendigo is also a beautiful City to have a look around. Have a safe journey which everway you travel, but if you do come via Ballarat please call my kettle is alway on...

Cheers Ros & The Boss (Ivan)....

DEFINITELY pass through Shepparton en route to Ros' lemon slice!

Drop in to a cafe called Mustafa's, near Coles. Turn off the main road at Middy's (Middendorp's Electrical) - can't miss the purple building with the big yellow M in circle.

Order one of Mustafa's Jumbo falafels. Heaven on a stick... err, without the stick.

Then don't bother with dinner. :D

And if you need an overnight spot before boarding the ferry, we're about 25~30 mins drive away from it... on the western side, away from peak-hour traffic - and that bloody low-clearance bridge in Port Melbourne... PM me.
Regards & God bless,
Ray

The navigator is the nervous type, even going into tight service stations she prefers to keep her eyes shut as she is worried that we may hit something

After Ballarat we will position ourselves somewhere central to the GOR and do the sightseeing in the toad.
Do you have plans about which way you are going back up to Qld?We came down via the western route so as to visit family and we are planning on taking the coastal route back up north as we have family in Sydney to visit.

We are booked on the ferry on Saturday 2nd Feb, booked that date as the traffic should be less being a weekend.

Ros we were planning on dropping in to say hello. With what I have read about the lemon slice it is up there in culinary circles. Could you PM your number and we will give you a call. Could you give us a recommendation on CP's in Ballarat?
