Hi Rob,

It is not about the initial outlay of dollars as the Bushman is more expensive. I often hear about how good my Engel is because it's 20 years old etc. but you also hear about them (and other brands) having problems when only a few years old. There is a woman camped up where we are, she has 3 Engels and one of which died a few months ago just out of warranty. I guess what I'm saying is anything mechanical like this is subject to failing, which is why when I buy something like this I don't just look at the name. I look at the type of components used, the track record of the equipment, the availability and cost of spares and ease of repair if required. It came down to two models when I was researching, they are the Engel and the Bushman. But as I have said a few times now, it all depends on how you are going to use it and your own requirements. The way the lid opens (Engel from the end, bushman from the side), power use etc. The big draw card for me was the versatility to be able to change the capacity (four sizes) from 35 ltr up to 52 ltr. I just hope I can be talking about how well it has run in 20 years time. ;) Thanks everyone for your input.

Craig I have to wonder if by increasing the area inside that is to be cooled and not changing the size of the system that does the cooling, whether it could handle the extreme heat at times?
I guess it does or they'd be flooded with complaints.
Incidently my Engel opens from the side. Few years old by now though.

Hi People, The Danfoss compressor is a 3 phase motor John, Thats how they get so much grunt from a small compressor. I think they are the best small fridge compressor, The BD35 is the smaller one and the BD50 is the same but has heavier wireing and a longer stroke, I have a shed full of broken Engel compressors , but only 2 Danfoss .The Chiness copy is a Wancool =(crap).Plus very thin insulation. If it were me I would go for the Bushman by a long shot..

Hi Chuck ,I got the spelling wrong. ( I know it should finish with ER) smile...
Its wankool, Its one of them things ,you see it every day but dont take that much notice.
Funny thing is the Danfoss will run from the wankool controler, so I would say its a dead set copy .

Well we took the plunge and bought the Bushman yesterday. I can just hear a very slight fan noise if I listen closely.
Just one step closer to heading out bush for 21 weeks. We leave early April. 8-)

I have had the freezer set to -22 since last night and am not 100% happy with it's operation. It pulled down to -19 but will not pull it down any further. I know I won't be setting it that low normally but I was curious whether it would pull it down to the Max setting. I will be having a discussion with Bushman tomorrow. It is currently at -18 which is pretty good really as that is about 50 degrees below ambient but last night during the cooler hours it did not pull it down that far, maybe I need to let it run another night. Maybe I am expecting too much. How low will the other brands pull down?
