Japanese diesels like to be reved a little more than the US or UK's.

They don't like being loading up with low revs. Is it a turbo? If it is, do consider an EGT gauge. Exhaust Gas Temp.

I've go one on the Isuzu and greatly helps with telling how the engine is working. Esp' when you think its in a good gear but then the EGT's start climbing.

All turbo diesels should have one, especially if the fuel has been stepped up a bit and no intercooler fitted. By the time you see the water temp rise the turbo may well have already suffered damage

EGT is the small middle one

Boost is the one below. Boost is the amount of air pressure (psi) being pushed into the engine from the turbo.

They work together. As boost increases so does EGT.

Non turbo charged engine don't really need either, although long drags at low revs can generate a bit of exhaust heat, the eng temp will climb faster. With forced induction engines the balance changes, effectively the air being forced into the cyl increases the capacity (volumetric efficiency) to over 100% and the exhaust gas becomes so much hotter yet can't escape until some of its heat energy is extracted by the turbo. The pyrometer is measuring the exhaust temp after the turbo and from that a reasonable idea of the temperature the exhaust valves and turbo are experiencing can be established. The aim is not to push those temperatures too high as that will damage the exhaust valves and turbo, it can even melt the pistons, a common Mack truck problem in the early days.

Yes, well, as said, the vehicle is naturally aspirated and that is not going to change unless Lynette's lotto tickets pay off (I don't buy them), so as much as I would like to talk dirty about boost and exhaust gas temperatures there will be no nice gauges or whistley noises. Bugga.
