something that crossed my mind last night. can these batteries be held in their upper volatages (even though there is a draw but the solar is keeping them charged) or should i be letting them go down so they actually cycle?
The battery carries the load when the sun can't get through the cloud that just passed over it, it then needs to recover, so the battery acts as the header tank to smooth out the ripples in the supply side and still have enough in it to supply the over night requirements.
The magic box is the protection side, it isn't the charge control but the cell protection so it can/will stop charging if a cell goes over voltage but the solar regulator is the primary control device.

I see the experts over in CF have managed to turn another person off converting over to Lithium power. Bloke reckoned he need a science and maths degree to work it all out.

After hearing about a few system and seeing one in the flesh it might be a better thing if some people didn't do their own lithium conversion. You certainly don't need a science degree, but you do need electrical wiring sense when it comes to extra low voltage stuff. Lead acid batteries will at least drop their voltage as the load increases and increase their internal resistance if the charge or discharge is beyond their capabilities, lithium does not so poor wiring practices can have serious consequences when fusing to protect cable carry capacity isn't employed. Recently finished a rewire of a van that had no fuse on an 8 B&S cable connected directly to the battery. The saving factor was they were 2 x 200Ah AGM batteries so the voltage dropped as the load increased, the same mistake using a lithium battery would have meant the van would most certainly have burnt to the ground.
