Don't bother!!!
Dot will still sniff you out!!
Not sure but I think you can just get a new $2 SIM card.
Be careful because I think some SIM's carry your contact list.
Both of my mobile phones are unlocked & I can use either my Telstra or Optus SIM in them.
Depends what you are trying to get rid of & what you need to keep intact I guess.

Re: New numbers for mobile phones...
G'day Chuck, our phones are through amysim (great optus reseller) and can change the numbers any time we like they told us. Doubt they'd handle it if you did it a lot though.
We had to change our band ph number las year, as it was associated with an ex member. Amysim asked if we had a number we wanted to use, as we didn't the lady made some suggestions and we took the one that seemed to suit the band and didn't cost a cent.
Depending on who you are with just ask them and see what they say.

Re: New numbers for mobile phones...
OK. Thanks for that sorta confirms my original thoughts.
Reason is that we have just been scammed for about $3600... short version is that I received a text or email (forget which) a cupla months ago from Telstra stating that my email account had been suspended due to sus activity!
Rang them to find out more & they referred me to their tech people on a particular phone nr. Rang them, turns out they are in India & they do all the tech work for Telstra & about another 6 o 7 countries.
They ended up remotely on my pooter for 4 hours that day & although no cost to rectify the problem they did suggest an annual cleanout/update for around $150 a year. Hesitated at that then they came back with 4 years for $400. Took that.
On Tuesday I received a phone call from them advising they'd had a major problem at their end which left their system unsecured for some time.
Stated their contract with Telstra insisted they advise all their Telstra clients & reimburse any annual fee, if any. Hence the call to us.
Further stated that they would need access to the pooter again to clean out any grubs that may have entered & also to install a new security system between our pooter & bank, their system & bank & their system to their provider.
Then asked which bank we wanted the $400 direct transfer to, stated which bank & they said to bring it up on screen but don't log in yet. Did so & then they brought up our account showing current balance(!) alarm bells ringing here (but... Telstra supplied) & they then appeared to do the direct transfer & the balance increased by $4,000!!! Then he came back on the phone & apologised as he'd just been advised by his bank of the error.
Suggested we do an international transfer of $3,600 back to his back to adjust the balance correctly but further stated if the bank asks if the transfer is for a commercial reason there will be an additional tax fee of35% ... so to avoid that simply state it is for a friend over there who has landed on hard times & needs some assistance to get home. Done & no questions asked by bank, then.
However, 10 minutes later lady from the banks scam section rang us to ask if the fund transfer was the result of a phone call from India... yes... then it's a scam, further stated that our account was not what the Indian bloke showed us on line!!!
I was just stunned & stood there with my mouth open as Trina tried to hold her nerves as she continued talking to the bank lady.
End result was that bank is confident they can get the funds back with little problems due to the very small time frame since we did the bank transaction.
Bank then froze the accounts for a short time.
I then rang Telstra, Ombudsman & ACCC & gave them the info... no promises from them yet.
Yes, we do both feel like a cupla dickheads but the bloke doing the talking at their end was very, very convincing... & the contact did come from Telstra originally.
Hence the reason for changing pho ne numbers.

Re: New numbers for mobile phones...
There is no doubt they are getting way smarter than the old Nigerian scams.
We have had origin energy bills that anyone would pay they are so genuine. Trouble is the farm uses so much elec we are on the contestible market, so no retail bills, so was obviously phoney.
Don't believe anything you hear and only half of what you see is good advice these days methinks.

Oh No! Chuck!
One consolation .... you got off lightly I reckon.
Friend of mine got done for $87,000.
Luckily he got it all back from the bank. They carry insurance that covers customers for fraudulent transactions.
I bet they are still in front because they employ very few tellers these days.
You need to get a good chap to double make sure they haven't left any gates open on your computer.

Oh yea these mongrels are sharp alright ,when and if they get caught they need to be whipped and taught a lesson ,
just so that they will remember next time.
3days ago i had a bloke with a packey accent try to tell me he was from the ATO and he was checking out some ATO scams,
at that i just hung up .I wished i had a pea whistle i would have given him a blast that would make his ears bleed
We all have to be so vigilant these days.
Then there was the time we got a letter from telstra stating that they over charged us about $43.30 too much ,and they wanted
our bank details so they can put it back .......Yeah Right.
