As I'm progressing with things, the next big project will be painting the outside.
Parts of the sides have already been hand painted with maybe something like Rustguard and been done with maybe a roller.
The guy I brought it off said it was painted with metal paint and I didn't ask what type.
The finish is a matt finish which I'm comfortable with.
Other parts seems like original.
I don't have the facilities for 2 pac.
Has anyone used any alternatives.
Really looking for a cheap cover up job.
I was quoted $10,000 for a professional job.
Cheers

Re: External painting.
Exterior enamel house paint, works wonderfully well on buses and will go over just about anything. A couple of coats with a good cut and polish makes a big difference, sprayed or rolled. I spray my vehicles, use 2 pack on the cars and enamel on the bus. Two pack is not hard to use, just expensive, the top coat for the Sahara costs close to $500 for 4lt of metallic. When you add undercoat, then clear coat is adds up. If you spray, make sure you have a good water filter.
Painted one bus with spray cans, which were on special at $2 a can. Lasted one season before the colour had faded to nothing.

Re: External painting.
Grab the 10K one, I know some have spent 50 on a paint job ! Bloody ridiculous
Or use the roller, something to do with doing it on a hot day to get a gloss ? Others may know more.
Gloss always easier to clean and after you have washed it a few times.......

Re: External painting.
I did the Bedford roof with Rust Guard Gloss enamel. Sprayed it on. Used about 6-7 litres; quite a few heavy coats.
Quiet happy Kappy. I'm possibly going to do the same to the walls.
(You can easily choose any colour and the paint top tint's it.)

Re: External painting.
Google "roll and tip" ........
Bit harder to do the sides than the roof as it can tend to sag & run.
I'd recommend 2 pack polyurethane paint ............ It'll last for years & can be scrubbed with a scour pad without marking it.

Re: External painting.
If you do go with the house paint gloss enamel, heat the can in boiling water and do the job when it's good and warm weather and dry (something I didn't see while we were in WA) and the body work is not cold but not hot to the touch. The roller marks will smooth over as the paint will remain thin and liquid for a while. I have no faith in water based paints retaining their gloss but it might be I'm just from the age oil based paints ruled the world

Re: External painting.
You could also think of using an "enamel add"
It makes the finish harder and glossier, but like a 2 pack gives a shorter pot life.
I sprayed an old car once with house paint and enamel add and was surprised how well it turned out.
If you do use a spray gun with ordinary enamel be aware also of the overspray. Enamel stays wet in the air and will travel for miles and stick to everything in it's path.
2 pack and water based paint is nowhere near the problem as it dries in the air much quicker.
Of course you can also use 2 pack with a brush and maybe a small roller, but pot life is very short.
Personally for a cheap but good looking job I would spray a good enamel with the additive, even if you have to hire a compressor, as the finish is so much better. You can also get auto enamel quite cheap, which would be my preferred finish - still using the enamel add.
Cheers,

A good paint job is 80% preparation no matter how you apply it. Once the rig is cleaned, filled, sanded, masked off, re-cleaned and primed - you may as well go the whole hog and spray a decent 2 pack paint.
Shortcutting the above just brush or roll over whatever is there every couple of years.

Re: External painting.
I've seen some pretty good results on youtube using rust guard equivalents.
Not sure if I want a glossy finish, quite happy with the current satin finish.
I really want get rid of the remaining artworks that are still there. I painted the front wheels with rust guard after I stripped the old build of shitty white paint as seen on the rear wheel, all wheels on the bus and trailer have been done the same colour.
Looks ok I reckon.
May just play with some small sample, got my trailer to do as well.
