Could the problem be in Explorer? Parts of explorer are used by Internet Explorer and any problems with these bits of programming when accessed could cause a conlict /blue screen.

Have you tried a fresh windows installation preferably without many programs or extras installed?

A copy of the old hard drive transferred onto a new drive would not isolate the problem to either software or hardware. If there is a problem with the existing operating system software, trialing a new drive with a copy of the old installation would mean any software issues or clashes would be transferred with the copy to the new drive.

Just a thought

If you are on an hourly rate with the tech this sort of problem could quickly blow out beyond the value of the computer. I would think what if you are being billed for 9 hours work and the cost of parts etc you may already be getting close.

Did you get the old HD back? Hang on to it at least until this is resolved.

Are you going to be charged for subsequent work after it was returned to you as fixed?

An just for interest sake;

Has the tech tried setting up a known/reliable HD with a fresh (from scratch) install of Windows from genuine CD's and then tested the machine prior to installing any other software ( programs, drivers, data etc) ?

I assume that the modem connections were through the network port while the Optus Telstra ones were through a USB 'wireless' stick?

Has the network port been tested other than with a modem- internet connection.

Are your modems just modems or modem routers and if they are routers is the machine correctly assigned an ip address before the internet connection is attempted.

Exactly when does it blue screen ie when you plug in the modem, when you run the modem connection software ie telstra optus, when you open a browser (have you tried different browsers, have you tried to open a browser without the modem connected)

Did the tech try a recovery from a time when the machine was known to work OK?

Did the machine work correctly including internet connectivity in the techs workshop?

So many questions just to try and narrow down where the conflict might be.

This post COULD be a mile long but I'll make it short.
There is a 'program' called NAVIGATRIX that you can download to a Windows computer along with the Windows installer.
http://www.navigatrix.net
When you click the installer it installs everything it needs on an empty 4gig or bigger USB memory stick.
(It is a complete Linux distro with many, many programs on it.

Now take the HD out of that laptop, plug in the USB stick & do whatever you need to make it boot from the USB stick.
It will probably show in BIOS as a USB CD drive.
Wait for it to boot & then try the browser on the internet. (3G,4G or network cable)

Before you do that, if there's 2 memory sticks in the laptop, try one at a time in each slot.
Internet Explorer and Explorer have the bad habbit of DEMANDING the exact sector in the memory every time whereas most programs couldn't care less what sector it uses.

Tell us how you get on.

Sorry!!!
I fixed the above website address.
It should have been .net instead of .com

Did not need the mallet Hamo. Still not on house wireless but it at least recognizes wireless setup from phone.
Its a bit like those cars Chip Foose does on overhauling. Look similar outside but gee the inside is all current stuff.
