Headlight Conversion

HI, Not sure if this belongs in here.

I have a Mercedes OH1418 ex Vic school bus.

This rig has 4 sealed beam headlight, that are sorta OK.

Wanting to convert to LED as most are 12/24v are polycarbonate so don't break that easily.

5.75 leds aren't that expensive but wont fit the hole left by the sealed beam without serious mods,

I can get halogen replacement lens, but if I can convert to a more efficient headlight.

Has anyone done such a thing. I attempted to attach photo but got message too large then resize got message unable to determine size????

A lot of H4 style LED headlight bulbs on the market now to replace the original halogen high/low beam globe. The thing to look for is the depth behind the bulb because it has a heatsink and fan to keep the bulb cool and some vehicles don't have the room behind the centre of the headlight shell to fit the heatsink and fan

I have, just used longer screws, but got asked at last mechanical if they were ADR approved, had to say yes but realistically ?
Off ebay, they are so bright, I use 1 row (out of 3) in one pair (have 2 pairs) as low beam and the rest as high beam, otherwise get flashed by everyone.
Be careful !
I had the old sealed beams in when I went for rego.

Mine only get turned on at annual inspection , I don't drive in the dark .

Yes Bill I'm only 8.06 Full of everything we have with us I'm allowed 9.2 . I weighed the bus in Tungamah Vic on the way over .
So no pits just a authorized inspector , still a pain in the butt.

Just make sure they are ADR compliant.

Any copper or road's guy will nail you if he's in the mood. An instant non roadworthy and a $1000 bill to bring your bus upto roadworthy standard.... because it has to be completely inspected and pass.

Plus, remember,

1. a lot of design goes into the reflectors to cast the light low and to the left. Please consider the driver in the car coming the other way being blinded by the non ADR compliant lights.

2. and non ADR compliant lights are easy to spot.....


Hence, I'd be fitting good quality Hella Halegons.

As far as I know HID types don't do well with reflective lenses.

Replacement globes for normal headlights have heatsinks and need room.

May just go with the halogen conversion lense will be better than sealed beam.

Unless someone has fitted an alternative headlight assembly,
