We've got space for a small van and vehicle or less than 7m motorhome complete with power, shower and loo in the shed for visitors and the amount of power they might use is neglible and we would never think of expecting payment. Mind you it is only for a few days although some have stayed for a week with no problem. We've also doen the same at others houses and it is never a problem.
I can see though if you have plenty of room and visitors stay for extended periods that it would be fair to contribute to power costs or a meal out occasionally, depends totally on the situation and timespan.

Thanks to all that have replied. I just didn't want to appear to be bludging on my mates. The only place we usually stay is at friends farms and there is always something to do then. Oh, and the relos always have something lined up to fix or repair as they are really technically minded.

Similar here, you only stay here by invite, but if you get one then you are treated as a guest. If you drink all my red without chipping in during your stay the power might go off ! We have had people stay and never a problem, if they can use a bit of our dirt for a time, works for everyone. No payment required or accepted, if I was staying somewhere after invite and was asked for payment I might have second thoughts, different if a commercial operation like a farm stay or something though.

Re: What is the accepted right thing to do?
We try to give appreciation back that suit the host, Depends on length of stay, what you do with the power / water, (have the air cons going 24/7 washing every day to me is a no no and those people would NOT be welcome back at any cost (have been done once or twice with this ) Some people's places we have stayed at as expected declined $$ but we thought $10 night with Power & water was a really good deal so we found out what the people liked and bought the appropriate amount of goodies, eg, The male liked Bundy ginger ale? and the lady loved chocs so we bought . We stayed 7 days so spent $70 at the shop and they did appreciate the goodies. Another place was the person refused any $$ so we did the meal shout and also a naughty pkt of fags and also shared the meals. A block of Chocs and a hand written "Thank you " never goes" astray. This day and age the high cost of power & water is sometimes over looked by many as they don't have those expenses so awareness is also a contributing factor. We stayed with friends before my last adventure and they are never going to accept $$ so we did their gardening that needed doing, sprayed the weeds, pulled out rubbish from the bushes, provided a couple of meals and scones, and took them out for a pub meal to say thanks. Chuck, If I let you pat my pussy every day when ever you felt like it would I be able to stay at your place???

How do you get all the special treatment Chuck ? Dot camped at our place and I could not get near her pussy. I did get a couple of jugs though.

It's the little things. Have often heard comments/minor whinges about the amount of toilet paper that guests go through. All these comments have come from the lady of the house. Blokes seem most concerned that guests keep up in a beer shout, or similar. Perhaps a couple of gift wrapped rolls of Toilet Tickets is to be left behind as a way of creating fond memories with the opinion leader, after a stop over.
