It was one of these inverters https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Power-Inver ... 33ed92420c that was a dead short on the 240vac side to the case when I connected it up on a house job to run the water heater as a dump load on its own circuit. Fortunately it had its own RCD with a separate earth cable to the inverter body when installed so it didn't get me but let out the smoke instead, another cloud with associated sparks each time I reset the RCD  Best be very careful if purchasing one of these items. Same seller and put up a real fight for a refund, had to get E Bay complaints to step in and that worked because I kept a copy of every email back and forth between the seller and myself trying to sort the problem first. I'm sure if I had simply sent the inverter back for them to test I'd still be battling them, but I got a full refund including return freight so a thumbs up to E Bay for that one
