Night all, someone else can turn the lights out

Its ok wandering will, I can manage a few light switches, you take it easy now anad give your missus a hug for me. My back is killing me after getting our the big branch cutter and hacking into some hugely overgrown lavenders, but I know this ache will pass, I was overdoing it a bit. Just give her ahug and let her know we understand her real pain

Re: Nightly Goodnight Everyone
Derek & Jo great to see you are coming to help at a Blazeaid site.
I am at Kilmore at the Blazeaid Base at the moment.
I am sorting out the tools etc to go to the sites as we set them up.
Doing maintenance on tools (making good ones out of broken ones as we don't have an endless supply)
Also I have to redo the signs for direction to the sites that are placed around the towns where the bases are and make new ones for the vehicles and to put at sites where they are working as there has been cases where the local fencing contractor has got his nose out of joint. Plus the signs have souvenir value and all the old ones have gone missing.
As we are getting so many calls for bases we are desperately short of everything. The site we are getting ready for now will be short of tools at startup as we just ain't got them. Not sure of the others we are preparing as we will have to go out and buy them and we have to be careful as we have found that at some places the local suppliers jack up the prices.
Our price for a chain saw here in Kilmore is just over $400 at one site the local did a special deal for $700+. Real special price for people helping their community and we find this often,
One site has just been told that they have to vacate the area they are using for meals etc at least one night a week so the bingo ladies can use the same hall they always have. Looks like we may be moving towns as there is no where for the workers to have their night meal and a sit around after working all day. There will be some unhappy farmers as some have already been advised that their fences may not get done as the site will possibly move in a short time. One of the beauties of having everything in a container when it is shipped out, as to move we get the carrier in to pick up the container everything is moved in one hit.
IF anyone knows of a company changing uniforms or dumping clothing/shoes/safety equipment or similar we would love it as many people turn up in shorts and Tshirt and then expect to work in the dirt and dust after a fire as well as all the scratchy things. Also any tools such as bolt cutters fencing pliers wire strainers and spinners would be appreciated.
We will try and get them moved if need.
If you are travelling and want a great experience try doing some work at one of the bases as I can assure you it will be a life changing experience. Most sites you get a morning meal before you head out and a night meal supplied by a local charity that gets paid through the fire relief fund. The mid day meal is usually supplied by the farmer IF they still have a home of course.
If going to a base, if possible take long pants and long sleeve shirts and also if possible make sure you have a good pair of gloves, safety specs and a wide brim hat as well as solid boots. Some gear is supplied but sometimes someone else has already used them so be warned. Much of the stuff walks when people leave so it is a high expense to buy all the safety gear and we normally pay full price for most of it. Also a good drinking bottle is handy.
At a site it does not matter if you can fence, if you are willing you will be trained and if not you can roll up old burnt wire, carry posts etc or stay at the base and maintain tools, prepare food and cleanup or just answer the phones. There is a need for people to just go out and talk to the people effected by the fire / flood to offer moral support and find out what they need etc. You work when you want to within reason and you work to your pace and stamina level.
If you want to donate money then it can be done through the website www.blazeaid,com. All money is used to buy food and tools or for running cost. NOBODY gets paid for working for BLAZEAID
We also get nothing from the government or the major charities and we have to pay full taxes for everything we buy as we don't qualify as a charitable organisation and it also takes many years for this to be done. Many Pollies have to be burnt out first.
Sorry for so long but thought I might get a plug in somewhere as I don't post on the other forums anymore.
Regards
Brian
