The other solution is pay tax based on the kilometres you drive with a discount for country based people.Newcastle George wrote: ↑Wed Aug 13, 2025 9:22 amSo, an extra cost even if you use very little fuel.![]()

Re: Road user charge to be introduced
Just found another story that the govt will impose an additional registration fee on EV or Hybrid vehicles only.

So, I would expect that whatever the new regulations or registration charges are, it will have no effect on most of the people that are members here. The only people that need be concerned are maybe T1, Margaret and.Tanks Not Tanks.
Apologies if you are an EV owner and I have missed you.
Edit. Line through Tanks.

Dave...I think that Keith's MG is a standard petrol model, the same as my next door.

My Mijty M is a petrol-only machine
Keith.
I'm now 87 years old, having experienced another birthday, and I'm still living in WA, single (gave up looking), white hair, no teeth, no money, no worries.
I plan to have another birthday next year.

HA HA won't effect me. I charge my scooter from my boat's solar and battery and mainly drive on the footpaths

12 × 5 house boat moored at the present in Mannum Waters Marina.

Re: Road user charge to be introduced
That's quite funny actually, the MG4 being new in SA gets 5 yrs I think free rego, the Winnie is registered in NSW and it is free rego because I'm a pensioner ..... so if I upgrade it to hybrid, it still won't cost me for rego, maybe the Prius, but that's about it .....supersparky wrote: ↑Wed Aug 13, 2025 12:52 pm Just found another story that the govt will impose an additional registration fee on EV or Hybrid vehicles only.

My dogs aren't very vocal in the mornings Terry, concentrating on eating

Now my days are quiet except for music and some TV, but that bores me. So think about things and try to find ways to solve the problems the world seems to have, but it's just an exercise in bored contemplation and fanciful ideas. However it's a lost cause and no way would want to get involved, have become resigned to living alone but able to visit friends play a bit of music walk on empty beautiful beaches and have the best clean air and water on the planet.
As for the road user charges, enforcing it according to mileage could be difficult, unless they connect every car to a central data base run by Ai and they know where you are every minute of the day. Not difficult to do, sticking to voluntary reporting, would lead to heaps of problems. EV's of today are already connected to apple play, android music and the car company, would be easy for any government to legislate to gain access to that data for verification and add it to all the other data it holds and has access to about everyone of us.
Of course most states have compulsory rego checks, which is another scam so they could do klm distance checks at those inspections, but Tas doesn’t have those checks yet our road injuries and accidents are the lowest in the country per capita, as are our road accidents.

Re: Road user charge to be introduced
NP,
Your traffic injuries & accidents being the lowest of all states just may have something to do with the relatively low number of kilometres of roads Tas has, compared with other states.
Not criticising, in fact I’m envious. Victoria’s fatality count has been climbing in recent years, following a couple of decades of decline. Too many idiots behind the wheel, mostly either young bucks &/or stolen vehicles.
However, every time an older person is involved in an incident there are cries for annual competency tests for everyone over 60!
I suspect it would be more beneficial to road safety if everyone aged 17 to 35 had to pass a competency (and maybe sanity) test.

Re: Road user charge to be introduced
NSW had speedo reading recording on the pink slip since the '80s, my EB Fairmont has had the broken odometer nylon gear since I've owned and when the mate bought in the '90s, so it has shown 200938kms as the speedo reading since he bought and probably a few yrs before that .... rego dept never picked up on it, so you could show what ever on the rego slip and they wouldn't know the difference.native pepper wrote: ↑Wed Aug 13, 2025 8:00 pmMy dogs aren't very vocal in the mornings Terry, concentrating on eating. Live by myself and have done for the last few years since my supposed lady went back to Sweden to look after her mother, coming back a couple of years ago only to return as one of her sisters was very sick and mother losing it. She inherits a pretty large part of a family company and properties and as 3 of her sisters are dead or dying, she gets more if she stays there until it's all over. So, I'm on the outer and in lots of ways happy about that.

All cars from the late '90s onward have OBD2, a simple plug in will show the kms recorded by the computer, a device that uplinked those stats could become mandatory and also enable Police Pursuit cars to simply shut down the drive and have you coast to the side of the road ...... simple enough to add into every car computer .... yet they have never pushed for it ..... but if money was going to be involved ..... that would be completely different ...... Road Safety .... really
