When would you like to not have to work on motors and start enjoying the holiday time more?.....
We had one trip to Taggerty and home that nothing went wrong, we were on the edge of our seats, the further we went, the worse we felt the disaster would be ....

I guess it's the difference between a mechanic and someone none mechanically minded, if anything went wrong, a mechanic can identify it and decide the level of severity and if a patch up will get you back on the road, or if you were going to be parked up while you did the repair. Someone non mechanically minded, every noise is a reason for stress .... Margaret is a bit like that ..... "What's that noise/smell" "You may need to be a tad more specific"

My mother's go to was "It's the diff" even though she didn't have a clue what noise a diff would make, eventually, she felt she would be correct and get to skite about it, so replying "It's the diff?" with that questioning rise at the end, always gets a bite

Picked up the plugs, the price was including GST, but being in the trade saved me $55 .... so $314:50 in total 8-) Then we went shopping at Aldi ..... that was 57 cents cheaper than the sparkplugs  and that lot of groceries is unlikely to get us 100,000kms before it has to be replaced  Seems fuelling 2 adults for week makes buying sparkplugs not all that expensive ;)

Regardless of mechanical ability or not; I think almost everyone would prefer to have a trouble free holiday than spending time at home or on the road repairing.

More so as you get older, slower and less mobile. Like we all are.

At the moment, we live in our home ..... 2 yrs at the earliest to rebuild on the block where the house burnt down.

If I work on the Winnie in someone's driveway or at a free camp, we are still at home.
I still enjoy being a mechanic, something you never really lose, being a mechanic isn't just a job that pays the bills, it is a pride in what you do, what you know and that you have the ability to diagnose a problem when it presents itself, combined with the skill to fix it ..... yet still smart enough to hide the bits left over ;)

When I get too old and/or the body just can't do it anymore, then I guess our travelling days will be over. Until then, I'm guessing things won't change a lot, at least until I finish fixing all the bits that need fixing.

You can always teach by talking when your hands or back conks out. My Terry taught at tech night school on a couple of nights pr week and enjoyed that very much. So did I because there were no dirty overalls.

Trained 3 apprentice of the yr candidates and a lot of TA's when industrial fitting and building the site cranes at Favco Faville, so I guess I could advertised for a mechanically inclined trade assistant ......

Thank you for that idea Dotti

If you get into a bigish town ask at the uni or what ever if they would like someone to do a night school, work on you're bus in days when you feel well enough maybe the students could be your students and do the work for you (Hands on experience)

Doesn't work like that here in NSW, TAFE teachers are very catty bunch and keep any vacancies like that for their mates. The mechanical trade is now 1 week a mth at Tafe, all book work, they other 3 weeks are at their employers workshop and the employer signs off on the practical work assignments set by the Tafe. Often, they will swap around apprentices between shops if they don't have much of the type of work required for that practical assignment.
We did everything at my workshop, apprentices would apply to do some of their training with us, so they got good hands on experience, carburettors was a popular one, I'd give them the job from removal from the vehicle to strip, soak and clean, then show them how the bodies were straightened, where the problem areas were, but they'd have to remember how to reassemble them .... but I'd end up helping most of them out, the panicked look on their faces after they had cleaned all the parts and then told to put it back together  Some of them were lucky and just got a single throat Stromberg or a Holley, the ones that got a Thermoquad 4 brl off a Ford or a Rochester of a Holden, certainly worked hard for their sign off ..... it all had to be same day, no leaving the bits over night and making a second attempt the next day ... some would be there till 9pm, but they got their carby back on and got to tune it on the dyno, so they were all happy with the experience .....
