Addy, cops fight scams

Post by Kit Kat »

THE Geelong Advertiser and police are working together to stamp out scams.

Two appeared in the newspaper's classified section in the past month prompting a warning to readers.

Senior Constable Simon Keogh said a man was recently duped into buying a Jayco caravan that appeared in the Geelong Advertiser on April 3.

He said the man deposited money into an overseas bank account and hasn't heard from the owner since.

"The victim has contacted the seller by email and told to deal with a company called eBay Motors before transferring a significant amount of money into a London bank account," he said.

"Please use common sense with these things and don't simply deposit money without being sure."

Murray, from Grovedale, who asked for his surname to be withheld, said he lost $12,000.

He said everything appeared "ridgy didge" until contact with the seller ceased.

"I simply wasn't diligent enough. I was in a hurry to buy. On the night I transferred the money I thought 'Hang on something's not right' and tried to stop it at the bank but no luck," he said.

"I just wanted to take the kids on a holiday.

"Now my money is gone and I'm left feeling angry, silly and stupid."

Geelong Advertiser classified supervisor Wendy Bow said her team was doing all it could to weed out the scam ads.
