The son JP was cleaning up his home garden & was spiked by a Palm spike in his knee, he's leg was sore and swollen after 2 days he had to go see the doctor & was put on heavy antibiotics, another 2 days later he was in terrible pain couldn't stand up & is now on a drip for 5 days, with blood poisoning

Those things are bad news but I've never had that bad a reaction from them, hope he's up and about again soon. Did the barb stay in the wound? Mine always come up in a white lump and the barb comes out in the goo, takes ages for it to heal though. I've taken to lopping the low hanging ones off near the trunk with the battery chainsaw, then cutting them up straight away and putting them in the green bin, the buggers are a hazzard at ground or face level.

Ours have big spikes close to the base of the stem of each leaf, the leaf bits themselves also have spikes on the end. I'd pull it out but it p*sses the old bathplug over the back fence off as he can't stick his head over the fence without it getting him so it's not all bad

Think you will find that they are called a Phoenix Palm. Had a couple in the front of our place got too big and tangled in the power lines so had em chopped...

There are any number of palms that are armed with spikes, the oil palm is one of the worst, closely followed by the date palm.
I have seen these called phoenix palms and also ornamental date palms, they look alright once they get to about 100 years old. After living in the tropics, I believe all palms should be eradicated from residential blocks, all they do is generate rubbish, and you can't even mulch the fronds, we used to run over the fronds with a lawn mower and then put the central spine in the trailer, until we got a load for the tip, found it easier to put the whole palm in the trailer, at least they don't sucker when you cut them down.

Yeah but the ones next door to me produce a new palm from almost every seed dropped, i'm always pulling them out along our boarder & their roots run everywhere, terrible trees.
so it's not all bad
