To protect and serve- Mackay Police

Drop in and dribble on about nothing serious. Seriously a mad place to hang out. Better to avoid it if you're not in the mood!!! If you're determined to be sad, bad, mad & angry then move along!!!

To protect and serve- Mackay Police

Post by RussellB[SA] »

A little video clip of how the local police clear the road for large load vehicles.

Note warning vehicles, double white lines on the curve and positioning of following safety vehicles!!

A classic example of policing in Queensland. To protect and serve.

Certainly not very good warning, usually ute with large sign & blinking lights, not just couple of police cars driving over double lines.

Hi Russel,
Not sure what you are trying to say here. Are you unhappy that you did not have enough warning that there was a wide load coming your way, or are you praising the escort and police for giving you nearly 40 seconds notice that you needed to be on the road shoulder?
There was after all an escort vehicle in the lead, as is required.

The copper should not have been over those double lines in the first place, not enough warning at all IMHO if there had of been another big rig then who would be at fault if there was a prang ? we keep hearing about how much time / distance it takes for a truck to pull up..

I would assume(without looking at the clip) that they were all ears on Ch 40 and other truckies would be aware there was a moving roadblock
Have now watched the clip
Wide load signed van should have been the warning to get off the gas. The first police vehicle would tell you its big enough to slow right down. They normally sit wide like that to indicate that there is a big load coming, the fact its a police escort should tell you that anyway.
you should be stopped by the time the second police car goes by
At least you didn't have to get right off the road !

From the mouth of an "expert, experienced truck driver" from elsewhere, he says not all truck drivers have their UHF on all the time and that does not excuse the coppers stupid driving. but then again I am just a female driver so what would I know?

All,
Anyway, you see here a good reason for listening in on channel 40. When you see a wide load escort vehicle coming your way it can be prudent to ask 'how wide is it mate' and he will tell you 3.8 or 4.2 etc. He may say you 'will be alright on the fog line' or give some other direction. But as a minimum, you should keep your eyes open for escort vehicles (along with any other hazard) and immediately apply some braking pressure and get out of cruise control. The wide load and it's escorts will always be in the 'right'.
Sucking eggs yet??
Sorry 'bout that,

Hi Bob, I never suck eggs for a start and as you are aware not all travellers have a UHF and an awful lot of those who do will not have it on ch 40 because of the language and caravaners usually use ch 20 (those not from a trucking background that is) . I don't think the police car would be considered to be in the right if over the double lines, might be wrong! When we have come across huge loads like that one there has always been a escort vehicle much further up the road and usually before the load itself another escort vehicle flagging and directing you to the side of the road.. Those 2 coppers cars looked like they were on their way to some emergency, not trying to get traffic over the edge of the road. :D
