Use Plain Dot, Self Raising already has baking soda in it.

Thanks Mike.
Q/ Could you use S/R flour instead of the plain and baking soda? I thought baking powder was used with plain flour, what does baking soda do apart from fizz up?? :?

Baking powder and baking soda make the flour rise higher, so if you want to try Sr flour and not add either baking powder or soda, you should have success.
Noting succeeds like success! Enjoy the baking Dot. :)

Most American recipes use Plain Flour and add Baking Powder. Saves having two types of flour in the cupboard, less chance of weavels.

So did the recipe get it wrong by putting baking soda instead of baking powder? I did that once and the scones rose like a stallion but tasted terrible even my husband couldn't eat them

If you use Spelt flour, the texture is much stronger but a bit of extra bi carb soda is required or it comes out like potatoe bread. Makes great cookies though :D
