Air Vents in back of bus?

Post by Dot »

Q/ What are your thoughts / ideas / suggestions on putting vents in the engine compartment cover (botton half of the pict) would that reduce heat from coming through into the bus interior and slightly heating the bed. There is already good insulation between the motor and the interior. (Good in cold weather but not needed in the warmer times)

Dot there is very little you can do except open up the back engine cover as soon as you decide to stop for the night.
Maybe you could add an electric fan to blow over the motor while parked?
Ever since trucks were invented it has been a problem. It's one reason that a lot of truck drivers prefer "long nose" trucks over "cab-over" trucks.
Heat will be radiated off the engine for several hours until it cools down. (remember it vividly!)

A stainless plate with fibreglass blanket insulation mounted 50mm away from the engine bay roof using stand offs and small computer fans blowing air across the gap between the 2 will stop the heat radiation, but it must be at least 50mm and a complete cover shield, no bits exposed to the radiated heat.
Air vents in the back will work in reverse, eddy air currents form behind the bus as it drives and will just push hot and dusty air into the engine compartment, not let it out

We find with ours that by the time we are ready for bed, its cooled off anyway. We have a rear mounted radiator, so air is being pumped under etc, but its still toasty at the end of the day. I put a couple of extra layers of the insulating bubble wrap stuff under too.
At least the mattress stays dry!
