TILE GROUT

Post by Kelvin12 »

G'Day All,

Kitchen tile grout. How does the domestic tile grout stand up to movement underway. Thinking I'll stick the tiles on with Sika but what grout to use the ordinary tile grout or do it with white, kitchen and bathroom silicone. Can't see a lot of movement if any as its a series of two separate reasonably short panels. I'll do the corner and top and bottom with selastic but its the grouting that I am looking at.

Thanks for this, I'll check around Bunnings or the local tile shop.

What about if you put the tiles onto a backing board affixed to the wall, easier to fix/take off rather than directly onto a "rigid backing"

If you put the tiles directly onto the bus wall and with movement would there be more likelihood of cracking
?? just a female thinking (no smart remarks either you lot) But you have air susp so that might make things better.

If the tiles are going to be glued on with sikkaflex them the grout will need to be very flexible. None of the Sikka products are suitable as they yellow with age, the white bathroom silcone might be the go as long as the tiles are perfectly clean and oil free so the silicone bonds to the tile.
I'll wait to see how you do yours and how well it works before I do mine in the kitchen  The ones around the edging in the bathroom are half tiles and fixed with Sika 11FC and white bathroom silicone grouting. they have stayed in place without any problems..... but the bus hasn't gone anywhere either

G'Day Terry,

Yes Sika 11FC was going to be the first choice to stick them on. I'll see if I can get hold of this flexible grout that Spybo mentioned, it could be similar in make up to Davco tile adhesive that is rubber impregnated for floor tiles. I'll let you know but the white bathroom/kitchen silicone is the other option. Messy but I reckon doing it bit by bit or a length of joint at a time might be better than getting the stuff all over the place. Maybe striping tape might be a cleaner option and way less clean up.

Just another problem for us bus converters.....

Why tiles? rather heavy for RV use. I once saw a Coaster where the chap had beutiful tiles in the shower, on the bench tops and on the splashbacks, looked really nice, pity it was so heavy the coaster was useless.

Only small splash back area, 56 tiles in total, (200x100) just around the kitchen sink. This is also a coach conversion 18tonne GVM so a small amount of tiles isn't going to worry unless my weight calculations have gone astray....
