Seats

Post by BillV »

Howdy intrepid motorhome enthusiasts..... I'm looking at seating. Not sure of the rules, do passenger seats have to face forwards? Can they be sideways? Dothey have to have seat belts? Are there any regs re swivel seat bases....do they have to meet an Aust std?

Thanks in advance!

No, yes, yes, yes, yes. :)

I would suggest that at this point you touch base with whoever is going to issue your engineering certificate.

On the other hand Bill........ as you live in SA I was told by the authorities that as long as the vehicle had a bed, a place to prepare food and was obviously fitted out so that it couldn't be used for "reward" (paying passengers or freight) that it could/would be registered as a motorhome/mobile caravan.
Once you have the rego in your hand you can wheel it back into the 'workshop' and go to your hearts delight.
There are no further inspections or certifications..............
You have 2 choices........ do it fully compliant over years and at GREAT expense so you wished you never ever thought of the idea or ..........
do it the old farmer's way..........
Both ways will result in you travelling and enjoying the scenery.......... with or without money in your pocket.

Bill, the engineer we used was Graham Burton from Tonkin Consulting 08 82733100 I do know that we can just have lap belts as our bus is a 1986/7 rego. Yes you can have swivel bases but they have to be ADR approved. You will have to go to Regency Park for a lot of stuff but George always rang the motor vehicles standards on 1300882248 for a lot of info & they were always happy to oblige.

We had to have our swivel seats in the swagman recomplianced when we changed the rego from queensland to WA. The inspector didnt like the amount of play in them.......... Last weekend i found a nut on the top of the swivel mount that was a bit loose. When i tightened it up, the play disappeared.......

Different states different rules, different engineers different ideas..... Bloody confusing to say the least. Think we should register our vehicles in the Cayman Islands....

The law is the same in all states. You must conform to the appropriate ADRs Australian Design Rules. Any changes to seats and seat belts require an engineering report.

Starting to sound like Collyn except he uses "SHALL" in capitals.
SHALL DO & "should have done" can be used in the same sentence with impunity? (at times?)
