Indicator light driving me nutz

Post by BillV »

Hello all, I've been a little distracted from my project, but getting back into it now. Trying to get a front indicator to work. Globe is ok (old looked ok, tried a couple of new ones)!I have flashing power to globe. Globe won't glow. Any thoughts?

check the globe base is connection to the contact. sometimes the contact is spring loaded and the spring may be weak and not completing contact with the globe lug/base

I plan to have another birthday next year.

Is it a circuit based system, the globe only glows because curent is passing through it, or is it a simple postive one side an negative the other? If it's the second type, check for a good connection to the body, a good earth, put the multi meter between the neg wire and the body work (a small nick in the insulation will give you a contact to the neg wire) does the meter pulse when the indicator should be flashing? If it does, just connect a second wire into the original wire and find a good metal contact spot with a bolt in it so you can put the other end of the wire onder it to make a god connection to the body, the light should flash now.

It's got me bamboozled, I assume it's part of a circuit as there are 2 positive wires going into the globe holder thingy. I earthed my tester on the chassis and still couldn't get the globe to work , even when I held the wires directly to it. I wondered about he earth to body, but assume with the tester it should have at least worked when it was properly grounded.

Is it a dual element globe?
Might be parkers & turning & relying on body earth. If in fibreglass body it'll need an earth wire to the outside metal of the globe via the holder.
So... how many elements in it? (globe)A lot of older vehicles get all sorts of replacements over the years... some designed for other vehicles.
Does the globe fire up directly off of a battery? Sometimes they blow down inside the base.

Simple, bad earth. ;) (that's why it looks like two positive pulses)

Check the complete wire/connection from the bayonet (or earth pin on the globe) to the chassis.

Thanks everyone

Had a disastrous inspection today, they couldn't find a compliance plate and since the old girl was built after 1971 (1972) they want me to get an engineers certificate to ensure Aust standards on all the components it's had ever since it left the factory. Fair chance it's put the kibosh on the project. Be throwing good money after bad. Hoping I can prove the bus is 12 months older than I think it is.

Bill the engineer we used wasn't that expensive. Graeme /Graham Burton of Tonkin Consulting Adelaide. Tell him George Beaumont recommended him. He is very helpful and approachable.
